Vault Style Piggy Bank

It's that time of year for Santa to fire up the gift shop.  I have made several versions of this over the years, and it is one of my most requested gift items.

The vision for this was to make a piggy bank with some design elements that looked like an old brick building.  Hence, the corner details either the mitered corner or the dovetailed corner.  Many of those old-time buildings had some corner details incorporated into the brickwork, and then, of course, the mailbox door is the vault door.  A piggy bank with a mailbox door that looks like a vault.
The original design was the dovetails, but that took too long to build on a Christmas time crunch, so in subsequent years, I simplified the corner detail so the elves (AKA my sanity) could keep up with demand.

If you want to check out how I made it, here is a video of the process

i agree about a great gift idea, so i just might do some myself ?  are those doors vintage, they look new ? i see a lot on ebay. where did you get the plates where the coins drop in ? great video.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nice, and I enjoyed the video as well. I’ve made some in the past, by building the box to accept the mailbox door. Never thought to make it oversize and cut out for the door on the front side.
I’ve got a couple more doors, that I’ll have to try out your approach with.
   Thanks for sharing
Love it! I agree that the splines make it look like a masonry bank building. 👍🏼

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

@pottz  I picked up the brass coin slot From Rockler, I have also bought them on Amazon.  The door I bought from Rockler as well. It looks like the manufacturer is not making this style any longer.  This year, I will probably look on eBay for a few.  The ones in the picture are the 3 1/2" by 5" size
Nice

I have 3 p.o. doors I bought 30+ years ago with a bank in mind.

May give that a go.

WOW. I have made a lot of these but I have to say, yours are exceptionable! I really like the style and detailing you put on yours. I'm going to have to watch your video. Super job.

Edit: Now that I watched your video, I realize I have already seen it many times. You have been an inspiration and motivation for my bank making. Over time, I have made over 100 banks in different styles. I only wish they came up to your quality!
i went on ebay and bought 10 vintage doors for 100 bucks. and i found the coin slots for 2.25 each.
jeff ive seen yours on lj's and there all very nicely made my friend.
