Orange Moon Keepsake Box

This piece measures 7"x 3.5"x 5". The body is bocote with a hard maple insert and a stripe of padauk around the edge. The top is made up of bocote, maple and I don't know what the orange wood is, but I really like it. If anyone thinks they know, please leave a guess.

I cut the moon on my lathe and used a forstner bit to create the recess in the lid and the box. The floor of the box is covered in a soft dark brown leather. For the handle I laminated a strip of maple between 2 pieces of bocote and mounted it with brass rods.
This was a fun, no mistakes box to make. After my last project I needed something to make me feel better and this did the trick. Something about this box moves me, it's one of my favorites. Thanks for looking.

Lots of style John!

I was thinking wenge at first look, Bocote you say!

Nice embellishments all around (and inside). Is you maple inside just wedged into place or did you tack it with some glue?
Fantastic box John! Well done all around.
This box is one of my favorites as well, regardless of who made it.   Just nice and pleasing.   Well done.

it's one of my favs too john. the wood combo just works !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Thanks Bruce, bocote is what was on the label from Rockler. The orange wood came out of their “buy by the pound” box, so I have no idea what it is.

The insert is glued in, and no matter how I careful I was, the glue still got on parts I had to clean off. I think next time I will just wedge them in or use ca glue instead.

Looks great!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Beautifully done.  I've never used bocote - really neat grain (which you have nicely wrapped).
Beautiful box. As others have said the wood combination is stunning.

It has already been said countless time, so I'll just leave it at,

I am impressed with this box!  Thanks for the tip on the "moon" on how to make it and place it in the box.

Your handle is also very cool too.

This looks great, really well made, lots of exotic species that complement each other.

How can you keep producing a lot of nice unique boxes!? This one is great, too.
