I made this to hold small items floating around in my desk. 8.5" x 6" x 2" The wood used was cherry and ash, with zebrawood and maple bands

Very nice John, love the mix of woods, and that bookmatch on the lid is pretty neat. Rorschach test, I think I can see????

That looks great - the cherry on the lid is really interesting!
Great-looking box, John! Much classier than the old cigar box I use.

May you have the day you deserve!

Really eye catching!Β  What finish did you use?Β  Looks great.
Great burl for the lid! Nicely done.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks Dutchy.

Thank you George, first thing I saw when I put together the book match was a dog face. Seems I see faces often with book matched burl.

Thanks Larry, The ash is from a beautiful shade tree that covered my deck until the Emerald ash borers killed it.

Thanks Ron.

Thank you Tony.

Thanks Steve, it’s a piece of curly cherry and the grain is so nice, I need to get more.

Thanks Dave. I know, I really don’t want to hide it in my desk.Β

Thank you Barb. This time I tried OSMO. The stuff is expensive, but it is so easy to use. I like the look of the finish also.

Thanks Ryan.

I think you really have a good eye to make a good wood combination! Beautiful:)Β

No name noobie here

Dang, comment doesn't appear to have "stuck"

Anyway, love the look but a bit posh for a desk catch-all πŸ˜€

The top/bottom overlap is a neat look and of course you eye for wood combos remains supreme!
Beautiful box. Nice choice of woods!!

I've never used OSMO but have read of many who really like it.Β  I like the "easy" part of your description(and seems like everything is pricy!).Β  I've been using Odie's a lot - also expensive but a little seems to go a long way.Β  Wonder how those two compare on application ease and durability?

Just read the review of all these brands/styles in FWW. I had ordered some Odie's but after waiting a month for it to be shipped (Peachtree via Amazon), I just canceled.
Read the article and ordered some Osmo Polyx for a project and it should arrive tomorrow.
Article author said if he had to choose two, one would be the Polyx and one would be the Tried and True. Had ratings on ease of applying, color shift (yellowing), protection, dry times, recoating, final sanding grit effect on finish sheen, etc. A good read for starting from zero on having used any before.
I'm still gonna get some Odie's and possibly the T&T.

Mainly for small stuff that doesn't need a lot of protection where I usually turn to Poly or precat lacquer.
