these were a commission from one of our lumber salesman to give as gifts. got these kits from Wood Turningz along with the antler. now drilling out a piece of twisted antler can be challenging. these were already pre drilled so that part was done. the pens are gun metal finish, my fav. some of the pieces had real porous spots that i soaked with thin CA glue. sanded to 400 grit them used the full line of micro mesh wet sanded. then just applied mylands friction polish.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nicely done....it's easy to lose the antler "look" when turning it, but you didn't....great job!

Mike

Very creative. Came out real nice
Those look great!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

You're not expecting this to go unnoticed are you?

That is a freaking lot of deer for each pen!

There, happy? 🤠

Kidding aside (or maybe not), those look really cool. Not sure the shape is "traditional", but not being able to feel it in the hand I've got to assume they handle as great as they look. You really went all out on these, just ignore the LBD coments, he is into SlimLines>

Must be nice to operate in a field where bribery is king! 🤠

yeah they are a little hefty but i wanted to keep as much of the antler look and feel as possible. the way these pens are held, and they are a mans pen they will be fine.
hey i said antler wasn't cheap 😂

Pottz - Can't believe they charge that much for little pieces of antler. A lot of guys around here have them tossed all around from hunting. I have a pile of them myself. I keep the big ones and usually make whistles, or give the smaller ones away. I find several sheds sometimes when hunting Turkeys in the spring.
I'm with Mel on this, you must not have many urban deer in San Diego eh?
Round here they are literally everywhere. I can understand the desire to keep some of the "antler" in the bodies. Really just need the antler tips or short prongs.
Good deal that they were already drilled, that stuff can really foul the air and smells like stink on a monkey.
Can't think of any antlers that would make for perfect pen bodies, maybe antelope are small enough to keep the outer texture?
not in san diego splint, the southbay of L.A. county. yeah antler is very expensive. deer hunters i know dont give away the antlers. pet stores sell antler for dogs to chew on but they wanted way too much. so hey anyone that has more than they need send some my way !

What's all the bitching about... after all it is dear!

Maybe I can sell you some for a few shekels less,

"dough re me....", on a serious note(s)... that is why I prefer the non pre-drilled pieces... you can pick your own "centre"... In the past when my daughter used to sell my pens, I found that antler with live edges were the best sellers... unfortunately all I have left are similar bullet pens without live edges and this lonely cigar with just a hint,

At first I was not a fan of live edges and thought they looked inferior, however, others loved them.  I/daughter initially discounted them, but as they moved she kept raising the price and they still sold out.

Next you'll have Mokey claim they look like acrylic and that will further substantiate your bitch about cost.

It's only acrylic lovers that may claim indifference... I still think your antlers pens look great... bugga the cost.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

eBay seems to have a lot of antler points in bulk for a lot less, but still expensive IMO.
DanB looks to have a source for faux reindeer antlers 🤔
thanks duckie. im surprised antler pens are big in AUS. i dont think you have deer hunting do you ?
splint-faux reindeer, really !

I have a few hunter friends... very few because of our gun laws, however on their travels they used to bring me dropped antler... some of the smaller ones as the large ones sell for a small fortune.  They tell me the problem is that dropped antler only lasts a short time... decay on the ground is apparently quick... or they're just using that as an excuse not to supply me.

I suppose the weapon of choice then would be a boomerang or perhaps a fast moving Ute?
there are websites like (the antler store) that just sell antler of all kinds ! and they dont give it away. hey they know city slickers will pat big for it !

Jackalopes are festering everywhere out here, might be the right mix of size and BBQ-able remains.
