Happy Wife Pill!

I saw a recent post from Jim who made his wife a "pan scraper". Good on ya Jim!
Not meaning any disrespect to wives everywhere by my title, I think making your wife's life easier is a joy!
Here are some toaster tongs I made for my wife from scrap. Along with a few other wooden utensils among many I have made for her. Guess what.... she loves them and I'm not allowed to touch them (even though I made them) because I don't wash them right! 😉

Nice. Do you know what wood they are? I know they’re scrap, but anyone have insight on a better wood to use for longevity in kitchen tools? I’ve made one or two, and they dried out and went all splintery pretty fast. Looking for ideas…

My tongs are pine. All the rest are maple. Grain direction is important and should run with the length as much as possible.
Give a couple of coats of mineral oil. Let sit for 5-10 minutes and wipe off excess.  Do this again in 4-6 months.

All good looking and functionable.   Well done.   There is rewards in making utensils that the wife loves.   She likes them No. 1 and the food they produce with them No.2.

Thanks. I’ll try it. Not sure what the issue is, but I’ll work on it. 👍🏼

Looking good Rick. I understand completely about not knowing how to wash things correctly. Warm/hot water, some soap, a little friction, What's to know. Dry immediately, they are wood. But tongs that ONLY touch toast, is washing really required???? I can use hers, but I can't wash them, just leave them on the counter..... Ok fine.

If you figure out how to do it the right way, let me know

Nice utensils Rick, nice design on the tongues.

Beech, Ash & Olive have all lasted for me, although the ash probably the worst of those 3.
I always hand wash them though, sticking them in a dishwasher will probably reduce their lifespan.
I really like wood spoons, etc. for the kitchen, something I need to try to make as well. Good inspiration!

SIL gave us some dollar store bamboo pot stirrers that I have tried to kill. Plenty of cycles through the DW with heated dry and they are still like new.
Yeah, I’d never machine wash anything wood, but the ones I tried still failed. Olive makes sense, since it’s pretty oily. Might try that. She’s got a shit ton of wooden spoons and spatulas. So many that I occasionally steal one or two for the firehouse, with consent of course.

Ya know.... pine is very petroliferous. Almost never dries out. Make it out of pine and coat with mineral oil. Should last for a long time. Even going through the DW.

I might try it MrRick. Thanks!

Acknowledge the effort, but only a small thumbs up as I have no idea how they (tongs) work... do you squeeze/force behind the dowel? ... which side?

.....  I made for my wife.....  because I don't wash them right! 😉

Some people just don't understand that all you need to do is take them into the shower with you... as long as it's not a fortnightly event, otherwise you go hungry for 13 days.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

LittleBlackDuck.... you slide the open end of the tongs over the edge of the toast, slightly squeeze to grip, then lift out. Simple.😉

Tongs must work differently down under.

At first glace, I thought that you make combination tongue depressor and grabber.

Or maybe a pair of chop sticks for a Westerner ?
