Shut the Box Game

I  This started out as making one game for the grandsons of a friend of mine but I thought I might like one too so I made another one . I had a couple parameters for them in that I did not want any holes in the outside and I wanted to put the bottom covering in from the bottom and not have to try to cut a rectangular piece of something and get it to fit perfectly all around.

I started with a lock mitered box with no top or bottom. The bottom edges were rabbeted for the bottom to be inserted and the blind holes were drilled for the brass rods holding the number tabs and the round cross bar stop for the tabs. The 4 box pieces were completely finished on the inside as were the number tabs. The box was glued together with the rods and tabs assembled.

Then I glued in the bottom that is covered with red leather. I taped off the inside of the box and finished the outside and assembled the top to the box. The brass pin in the front serves as the latch. Slight force will lift it.

The object is to flip all the numbers down from the amount you throw on the dice You can flip any combination of tabs down that equals the total amount on the dice. If you can't make a combination ., you have to stop and have to add up the unused tabs. The lowest score wins

This was made from material just laying around the shop. All I had to buy were the numbers from KlockKit. That was the hardest part- cleaning the numbers. The glue that came on the back of them would not hold at all and certainly not when you bang the tabs down. I had to scrape it off, wash with lacquer thinner and sand the backs before putting them on with epoxy.

The box frame and the lid are solid walnut. The tabs /flippers are some left over East Indian Rosewood sapwood and the bottoms are walnut faced plywood . It is 7 3/4" x 8 1/2" x 2" high and is finished with wipe on satin polyurethane.

Nicely done! Looks like a fun, simple game. .

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Great build advice, and made to last.

Though you do get a wag-of-the-finger for not lasering in the numbers! ☝️
lovely game box.  well done.

Ron

Thanks Ryan, Steve, Bruce and Ron.
Hi Ryan it is pretty simple but some times money is bet on the outcomes!!

Hi Bruce. the raised numbers were glued on before I bought this laser..otherwise they would have been engraved

Looks rich, don't know the game, but it looks like the one from a fine purveyor of expensive gifts.
Thanks, George!

Does it turn into a game of "snookered" if you only have the #1 left up... or do you have to fudge the throw so one of the douse jumps out of the box and hope you get 1 on the other?

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Hi Ducky, well you can get a 1 because after you have the 7,8,an 9 down, you can throw only one  of the dice. So you try to get rid of the three first!

Pretty box, Jim. Good looking “leftovers.”

May you have the day you deserve!

Now if you had to throw both douses... which I think should be in the rules, you would have to plan ahead to make sure that you don't finish up with the 1 by itself or it should be an automatic forfeit/loss.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Thanks Dave.

Hi Alex. the rule is after you get 7,8 & 9 down, you throw only one die..so you try to get  them down early.

Hi Ivan. Here are the rules. We add one in that when you get the 7,8 and9 down, you can just throw one die!
