Rattle

One of the guys from the high school who helped move furniture at our house is soon to be a daddy for the second time so I made this rattle for the new baby. It is made from cherry and maple and has 4 steel balls in each end and a 1/8" wall around the  internal cavities...so it makes a lot of noise!!

It is just buffed and waxed for a finish.

gnawable for sure.   nice gift.

That’s cool! Did you hollow out the ends first, then laminate it all together, then finish turn the outside?

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nice job Jim. I need to make a set of these soon.
Looks like it has the shape, smooth enough for gnawing, the baby will pass the sniff test on it most likely. Cool build.
Thanks for the nice comments. Cherry is good gnawing wood!!! But with no teeth...no worry!

Hi Ryan. Yes, I put 4  round pockets in , half of the finished depth, using a 7/8" ball end router bit. Add 4 balls to each end and then glued the halved together. The one thing I had to record was the distance of the center of the pockets from the end  so when it started out totally round, I knew where to  turn the balls on the ends centered on the pockets.

Nice rattle Jim! Wish I'd thought of doing that but my Grandchildren are past that stage now. Good on ya! 👍

Jim, I remember seeing these on the old site. Do you have any build pics or measurements? I would like to make one for my PT therapist as a thank you gift. V
Hi Steve. I made the pockets 7/8" diameter and  7 /16 deep on each side. They are on 3 3/4" centers and the balls on the end are about 1 3/16'' diameter. The center handle is 1/2" and  I just blended the ball on the end with the handle. I put 4  1/4" balls in each pocket and glued the halves together. BB's work but they are not as loud!
Cheers, Jim
ps. I look forward to seeing yours soon!
