Keepsake Box

This is a 5 degree tapered dovetailed keepsake box with a hidden compartment. This is my second one of this type and I wanted this one to hold a folded dollar bill in the hidden compartment. This box uses 6  5/8" N52 rare earth magnets for the closures. It is 6 1/2" in diameter and is 2" high.
The dovetails and the  storage pocket were cut in before the box was turned round
I burned in the 4 point star and filled it with turquoise powder so  a person would know how to open and close it.
It is made from Willow Acacia and finished with Danish oil and buffed and waxed.

Very cool. I’m liking those dovetail boxes.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Me likey too!

Be a great gift for kiddos, maybe even include a nice old silver dollar in the compartment.
very cool jim !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nice job Jim! There are some cool features in this one.
Nice job Jim. I was thinking you used the magnets to repel and lift the top when you turn the center. I see that's not how you designed it, but that might be something else to add to these style boxes.
I hate to admit this, but I tried to make something similar and could never get it to work the way it should. Struggled with the dovetail bit. I am not that experienced with a router. I use one, but not enough to be good at it. Maybe I should have removed as much waste as possible before I used the dovetail bit.

Nice, Jim!

May you have the day you deserve!

Very cool. Beautiful box. Very unique.
Nice work, looks great. I've been wanting to do some lathe work, think I'll try my hand at one of these.
Really cool box Jim. I was scrolling down the pics, and all of a sudden there was a secret compartment. Jeesh, just the box would have been a lot of work. High marks for getting what you wanted out of a piece of wood.

GR8 JOB 😍😎👍

Thank you all for the nice comments!! Especially thanks to Oldtool ( Tom) for suggesting this type of box  to have a tapered dovetail. That makes it easier to make and only one way on and off for the lid!!

Hi John I have made lids with repelling magnets and I could have done it here but I cut out the side of the pocket to get you fingers under the money that there was no room. Those 5/8" magnets make that cover "lock" on when turned to align them!! This needs to be made on a router table so you can "dial in" the cut for fitting the dovetail
