Shaker Side Chest

This piece is a lot like Christian Becksvoort's in FWW #311.

I made this from some of my mountain of eastern white pine.  I bought it 12 years ago from a guy in town who had trees taken down on his property and hired someone with a portable saw mill.  His plan was to build some outbuildings.  Instead, he had a bunch of kids and needed to move to a larger house.  I bought two pickups full at $0.50 a bf.

I built this to use in the area where I practice guitar.  I decided to build it in a "rustic" style.  This meant that when I messed up something I could just say to myself, "Wonderful, now it'll be even rusticer!"

Here are two of the boards that I used:

I used a wide board for the top.  Once I had the top made, I sized the rest of the chest around it.

Here's the inside of one of the sides:

The sides are attached to the sub-top with dovetails that no one will ever see (totally blind!):

This is where the drawers go:

The three cross-pieces have short (5/8") sliding dovetails at the front:

My son, a hobbyist blacksmith, made the drawer pulls.

Nice clean lines Chuck!

Really like the way you did the joinery, it'll last for ever 😬
The pine is a treat, nice wide boards 👍

Nice and rustic! If a knot falls out it will be more so.

One of the knots on the side came loose during milling.  I was able to slide it out and glue it back in later.  Of course by then it was about 1/4" thicker than the rest of the board.

Nice job Chuck, great joinery, but mostly love the board choices. You went full on, embrace the imperfections, and to think some peeps would select all of those beauty marks out, to make it look ho hum, kinda paint like. Glad you chose to show em off. Great score on the wood too.
I really like the continously grain across the front drawers.  Nice job!
Cool chest...lots of character!!!

Just a quick update on the utility of the bottom shelf.
