Small Gift Box

At the end of the summer, my son will be moving into his first apartment.  I made this box for him to use there.  The great thing about a small box is that it doesn't take up much space and you can put other stuff in it!

It's mostly made of claro walnut (California black walnut).   I got a weirdly shaped thick piece of this for free many years ago when buying some local (Massachusetts) black walnut from a cabinet shop going out of business.  It was an off-cut from a big coffee table.

The lighter strip in the lid is cherry and the miter keys are ash.

I took the idea of the lid from the book "Making Heirloom Boxes" by Peter Lloyd.  Making and fitting the lid were the only fiddly parts of this project.  You might be able to see from one of the photos that the lid is tapered on the underside.  It has to be thick enough at the back to hold the pivots (dowels), but it would look kind of clunky if it were also that thick at the front where the handle is.

Thanks to all for looking and commenting!

I gave the box to my son last night and he's very happy.  I knew he would like the dark color and the rather thick material.  As a mechanical engineer, he loves the lid design and mechanism.

Nice job Chuck! The lid details are a nice touch and claro walnut is always a win.
Nice build Chuck. Sweet looking grain on the Claro, and the mix of shades is very nice. A great catch-all box.
Nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Good looking box. Nice work.
The off center lid handle is a real eye catcher...nice!
Thanks Tom!

You just have to be sure to make it enough off center so that it doesn't look like a mistake 🙂

The lid design and the splines are nice! Beautiful piece.

No name noobie here

Nice looking box Chuck! I love the grain. I like the lid and and tab lift. Very elegant.
Not sure how I missed this...the offset tab on the lid is design genius.  What could have been just another nicely made box turned into something unique.  I may borrow that idea at some time in the future.
