As I worked on this project, I kept thinking of DUI. D for difficult for me to build, U for ugly when finished, and I for impracticable to use.
I wanted to make some storage for my shop. For some reason I decided to make it as an equilateral triangle. The three sides are from one wide pine board.
I also decided to make it sort of inside-out. I wanted to leave all the outer surfaces rough to match the style of the old barn housing my workshop. Not having the option of putting the rough surfaces down on the table saw or against the fence was a part of the challenge. The other part was all the 60 and 30 degree angles rather than the usual 90 and 45.
When it came to gluing the four cross-pieces into their angled dadoes, my clamping plan needed a last minute panicky addition. I had taped some appropriately angled pieces onto the sides and they seemed to work fine during a little test.
But when I applied more pressure while gluing, the little pieces started sliding out of place and the clamps were falling off. I quickly added some spring clamps holding scraps of wood to prevent the sliding.
Here are the cross pieces in place:
These are the pieces for one of the two drawers:
Maybe if I make another one of these I'll try to use dovetails for the drawers.
Here are the drawers being clamped and the results:
I made drawer pulls to be 1/4 the size of the drawer fronts:
I wasn't sure what to do with the triangular opening at the top. A drawer would be really impracticable since it would have no opening. I decided to make a "Mini-Me" version of the whole thing.
It's just wedged in, so I can change it if I come up with a better idea.
