Project Information

Set out to build a pair of floating nightstands about a year ago. Took a number of ideas from other lumberjock's projects, added some of my own and this is what evolved.

I purchased the wood from a lumber mill in the mountains about 40 minutes from my home. In response to my request for something with figure, the folks at Shoen lumber suggested Ambrosia Maple, which I knew nothing about prior to this build.

On the prototype I put the drawer at the top, but found that due to the tapered design, the bottom shelf was too small, which led me to move the drawer to the bottom of the nightstand.

The build, although straightforward took me over a year due to life getting in the way. ( bought and refinished a house for my father in law to call home)

I was concerned about the finish, as I experieced blotching with maple On previous projects, but following the advice of fellow jocks, I'm pleased with how it turned out.

After sanding to 320, I hand scraped all surfaces thinking it would make it less porous. I applied a coat of min wax wood conditioner and followed that with two coats of Zinnser Amber Shellac wiped on ( 00 steel wool after each coat) to give it a warm tone without obstructing the grain in the wood. Last I applied 2 coats of General Finishes clear wipe on.

Thanks for looking.

Yeah, cut some stock for parts, remodel a house, then cut joinery and finish can take a few months, 🙄

I like the looks of these, kinda a modern vibe without looking too sanitary. The way the drawer front meshes in is a neat idea. Power options often are overlooked so a 👍 for planning ahead!
looks great dan. i love ambrosia maple. ive done two head boards with it.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Those look good, well done!

Thanks guys.

Splint, yah not sure things have slowed since….. Moving into a smaller house required a rethink on a number of things, room for nightstands being one.

Pottz, I had no idea what Ambrosia Maple was until the guy at the lumber mill pulled some from a stack in a warehouse. Kind of like it myself now.

Thanks Ron.
Great looking night stands, the design is very nice, I like the tapered sides. Great work here.
Looking great!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

I missed this when you first posted.  These look great!  I like the design and the finish looks really nice.  I've never used Ambrosia maple.  Is it like hard or soft maple?  I used hard maple for a project, and it was challenging for bevel cuts.
They look great, love the design.
Of the Spalted Maples, I like Ambrosia best. Though the Ambrosia beetle is not rare it seems to me you don't see much maple affected by it anymore. I guess it's all about conditions, etc.
Very nice work Dan! Well done.
Nice work on the night stands......and beautiful wood!
