Pencil for McKinlee

I was given a lot of pen blanks from my good friend Mel Nielsen before he passed away this year and some were acrylic. I gave the acrylic ones to the greatgrandkids to play with. McKinlee found out that I make pens and brought me a blank and wanted it made into a pen. Well I had some slimline pencil kits and that is what she will get. I don't turn much acrylic and found it to be real " chippy" because it is so brittle but I found tools to tame it down. It is sanded to 1500 and finished with EEE and Shellawax.

I bought a set of carbide tools pretty much just because of those issue Jim. Very chippy, as you say.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Another beautiful gift!
Very nice. Like the design.

Very nice Jim.
I use a very sharp skew on acrylics and take light cuts.
Thank you all for the nice comments,

Hi Gary, I finished with a freshly sharpened skew, too!

cheers, Jim

Sharp looking, is there a lot of differences between acrylic and wood with the tools you used while on the lathe? I guess what I'm asking is do you use the same tools. Good job.
Thanks, Mel. I do use the same tools but acrylic is real brittle  so you have to go easy with it to avoid a deep chip that might not clean up.

Mel, a lot of folks (myself included) use HSS tools on wood and carbide tipped tools on plastics. The carbide reduce the chance of shipping resins. I’ve never had good results using HSS on resin.

The acrylic is different from epoxy resin or even corian. I use HSS on epoxy resin and corian all the time but have to use real sharp tools and a negative rake on the acrylic because it so brittle.

Honestly, I’m not that good on a lathe! I use negative rake carbide on anything other than wood

Jim Jakosh and RyanGi - Thanks, I have both HSS and Carbide lathe tools. Have a couple pieces of Acrylic I need to do something with.
Thanks, Dutchy.

Hi Ryan. I do like Jimmy Clewes does, I lift up the tool rest so the regular flat scraper meets the piece at a negative angle. It works great with big flat scrapers inside of bowls so you never get a catch.

Hi Mel, do you have any pen kits to use the acrylic on? Use real sharp tools!!!
