Bolt Action Pens

These are the first bolt action pens I have made and they are much simpler than the Slimlines that  I had previously made. These are 8mm bodies so I had to make new bushings to  mount them on my pen mandrel. All of them are made with Arizona Ironwood. I put the stylus tip on the back or each one. They are finished with shellac and wet sanded to 4200 and then  polished with  EEE and Shellawax.
One is polished brass, one is antique brass and two are  pewter. Which one do you think looks the best with that dark wood??

The antique brass looks nice with that wood, but the rest are certainly no slackers!
I vote for the matte brass, but all are great.  Wood grain is  fab.

All of them look good. But I like the third one in the photo.
They look great! I think I’m a fan of the furthest to the right.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Wood is the outstanding part.  Well done.

love em jim but im a fan of gun metal like the two on the right. ive never tried shellac but ive been using lacquer wet sanded with micro mesh. your finish is fantastic. i dont even try and use CA glue for a finish anymore. i usually spray on several coats then sand to a high gloss.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nice, Jim! I’m usually partial to gunmetal, but the antique brass looks pretty sharp with that wood.

May you have the day you deserve!

That ironwood looks really good, another vote for the antique brass one.
All look awesome, but if I had to rank, I would go with the pewter as #1, antique brass as #2, and polished brass as #3.
Thank you all for you comments and feedback on finishes.. I thought the gun metal ones would be the least favorite but they came to be the most favorite!!. I hope that is so at the show next Saturday!!. I had this one piece of the ironwood and it had several crack I had to work around. One still split in half when drilling and Titebond 3 saved it. One had section blow off in the lathe and Titebond 3 saved it too! Those cracks ran where I could not see them but all were salvaged and that real hard wood buffs up to the best sheen!...............Cheers, Jim

i think men will go for the gun metal, but the ladies will probably go more for gold finishes ?

My vote goes to the pewter,  but all are beautiful.

One for each...

What kits are those?.... wait, don't tell me... I have enough kits to last me 3 lifetimes.

I've never been a fan of turners that disproportionately bloat their smaller pens (primarily slimlines) out in the middle... I personally prefer straightish lines or just a very gentle curve.
However, the bulge seems in line with the concept of a bullet even though it may not be technically correct.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

To me, the second from the left has the best grain and the pewter hardware might overpower it.
In general, I’d go for pewter hardware.
Sharp, I like the way the grain stands out. Great job !!!
Beautiful clasics!

Thanks Pottzy, Tom. Alex, Gary, Mel and Ivan..  The Pewter/Gun Metal WINS!!
Hi Alex, those are Penn State Kits.  These don't have that copper tip so I don't class the in with a bullet pen. I consider them free form...mavericks like me !!
