good write up OT. as they say live and learn. i myself probably wont live long enough ! my experience with veneer has been limited to small projects. all in all id say this came out pretty damn good. if grandson is happy it's all good. plus once the shelves are full no one will ever notice any mistakes.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

It’s all a learning lesson!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Looks good to me.   Nice looking bookcase, even the cat likes it and cats are fussy.

I'd say your repair is a success. The bookcase looks great!
Thanks for sharing! The end result looks good, and it sounds like the customer is happy, so I’d score it a win.

May you have the day you deserve!

With books (or cats) in it you will "never" see the veneer isn't it. To me he looks great.

I think you did great OT!
I've had the same blistering from pulling a panel out of the vacuum bag too early.
Your recover is to be applauded, good work hiding the seam but that cat probably will point it out to everyone who gets close (cats are ingrates!)

The overall appearance is nice and consistent, the veneer will age with the solid.
👍
Although there may have been some bumps along the way, the final project looks wonderful.  What makes this extra special is that your grandson will cherish this gift made just for him.
The fact that you made it for him is the most important part of project 👍
As Dutchy said with books and other items on the shelves, little issues will disappear.

Life’s Good, Enjoy Each New Day’s Blessings

Thanks for the kind comments gentlemen, it makes me feel better about the outcome.

SplinterGroup, how long was your project in the vacuum bag?, that isn't supposed to happen.
I think you're having mostly the you made it, so you are intimate with all of the undotted I's and uncrossed T's. Looking at the pics it looks great. That is also why making bookcases are so nice. Many mistakes will be hidden behind a wall of books. :-)

After looking at the pics, and reading your title, I feared you had somehow veneered the cat to the shelf.
I was using some commercial veneer glue which required 1 hour to set before removing. Then I switched to TB "cold press" which needs two hours. Forgot to read the instructions and only had it in for one hour. Oops.
It was a tray panel veneered with walnut do I just ran it through the DS and added on a new layer.

I've only done that once, now I set a timer for two hours and everything has been peachy
Contact cement it the best for gluing- especially that big of an area. If he likes the bookcase...just buy him a lot more books- problem solved....or covered up!!

Jim,
I now agree about the contact cement, but that's water over the dam now. I may buy some "low oder" version just to test it out on a small section of the veneer cutoffs, still have a large piece.
The grandson has a lot of books as does his hubby, currently in grad school, both of them, plus he also works full time for the university. That's why the size of this case.
Actually the only thing visible is the change in hue above and below the bottom shelf. Who's going to look down there anyway.
Looks good to your grandson, so good to go.

Gentlemen, I must correct my comment above, as my error was pointed out by my wife. I'm a real doofus - no doubt;

I wood veneered a 90 mm PVC pipe some years ago with contact adhesive it looked OK (not great) but it does work.
I must see if I have a picture and post it as a "it can be done example"

Censorship!

--Nathan, TX. Hire the lazy man. He may not do as much work but that's because he will find a better way.

Deleted! (but still in the trash!)
Hey I found the 90mm PVC pipe veneering activity from 2016 if your interested
