Pagoda Styled Tile Frames

My wife is a crafty person, she also has dabbled in various crafts over the years.
At one point she made these 6x8 tiles, basically used the kiln to fire on tile decals. Kinda tricky work as the temperatures and time need to be exacting.

So time to do something with them.

For framing, I created the basic style and pieces in a drafting program. Ideally I wanted the frame to overlap the tiles slightly (0.2 inches in this case). The tiles are attached to a backer board, but glue can fail so I wanted to be extra secure.

Frames are about 9"x 12" .

The rails and styles interlock. With the shapes and all, I wanted to use router templates for a good fit up.
Great thing to do with a laser!

1/8" MDF (Sorry LBD!) yielded what I needed.

With these double sided taped to the band sawn pieces, I could form the required shapes and half lap joint pockets.
Thinnest piece is the bar at the top of the tile, then the sides are about 1/8" thicker followed by the top/bottom being 3/4" thick

Pockets were cut with a 1/2" hinge mortise bit.

Advantage of using templates for everything (even the back panel) is no need to square up corners with a chisel.

Frame #1 is all walnut, some walnut burl veneer for the narrow space at the top

#2 is cherry, mystery veneer in the space.

Thanks for looking!

A nice way to show off some nice art.

Thanks Nathan 😀

In the back of my mind is also getting them into the world and out of my shop where they'll get broken eventually.
Sweet frame, Bruce!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those frames look great! I really like the design. The style compliments the tiles perfectly. Nice write up, design, and build.
Good design, very nice looking frames.

Looking good! I considered making some framed tiles, but the tiles I see around are $$$.

Beautiful frame!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

No end to you and your wife’s creativity. I like it a lot.

nicely done splint, those frames compliment the tiles perfectly.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nice, Splint! Should make it a lot easier to find a good home for the tiles.

May you have the day you deserve!

Nice frame Splint, really sets the tile off.
yup, what they said

Once again you have designed a project that has a WOW effect.  The tiles are very pretty and the frames work nicely with them.  A win for team splintergroup!
As always Splint, that is perfect!

Beautiful all around - art work and frames. I'm partial to the cherry, my favorite wood.
Thanks everyone!

I also like the cherry "best" and thinking about leaving it in the sun to get the red better, The walnut has some great figure that doesn't photograph too well with my light source however.

BB, wish I had a real team! The rest of the group is just my shop squirrel and all he does is crap on my red oak in the lean to outside. (does that count)?

1/8" MDF (Sorry LBD!) yielded what I needed.

CANNIBAL!

Cool project in both frame and tile (great job SWMBO)... it is for that same reason that I spruik cutting capabilities of any laser with cutting limitations.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Nice looking stuff there Splint. Nicely built
