Rack and cloth apple cider press
We have four full grown apple trees and for some years I have been experimenting with (hard) apple cider production.
I have been using an electrical juice-extractor but it is very labour intensive to get any significant amount of apple juice since the filter gets clogged and needs constant cleaning.
I searched the Internet and found
plans that I used for inspiration for a suitable apple press that I could build from oak lumber that I had in store. The press uses a bottle jack and can accommodate six layers of apples at one time. One full press load gives about 17 liters of fine apple juice. I scaled the press to accommodate my lumber dimensions.
I also made six racks (lattices) from oak strips. These are needed between the layers of grated apples to allow the juices to flow.
Also it is good to have a frame which is lined with cloth when preparing the apple mash layers before pressing, so I made one of some leftover spruce that I had at hand.
