6.5 x 55 Mauser Military Rifle Sporterization Project

Here is a multi post series on sporterizing a 6.5×55 Swedish Mauser.

Some of the modifications I’ve done in the past on other rifles, and some I needed to learn. For instance I’ve never carved basket Weave so I will post both a practice session and the real carving.

Beyond this There is relief carving, hinging the floor plates, bedding the barrel, an after market trigger, crowning the barrel (it was previously shortened), jeweling and other embellishments.

Wowzers, that's nice! I have a Ruger K1022T that came with a laminated stock. I have a Hogue overmolded thumbhole stock on it now, and need to figure out the comb height. I have a walnut plank with some stellar figure that I'll eventually draft into use. I hadn't thought about engine-turning the stainless parts; that's a nice bit you've done there, as well. Checkering is too fiddly for these old hands, but a basket weave I could probably accomplish. Well done!

Thanks for the comments. It was a fun project for sure.

Nice carving! I got a carving set last year but still haven't even opened it yet. Thank you for sharing it and it's inspiring!

Very nice rifle, almost too nice to shoot.  My oldest is ready for his first big boy rifle and I'm looking as classic as possible; blued barrel, walnut stock, etc.  It will almost certainly be a .308 or 30-06 but I'm a little concerned about how well he'll care for it.  It could end up being one of those things that he's only allowed to touch a couple times a year to shoot then extensively clean.
Added lots of character to that old Swede Don!
Those old Mausers were probably the best kept rifles from Europe. They always were maintained to high standards.

Most excellent Don. Congrats on everything, I think the basketweave is extra special though.
