My friend ,Nick, who does the CNC plasma cutting for me will soon have a third child..a baby daughter. So I made this rattle for them ahead of time. It is made from 2 pieces of mesquite with the sap wood in the center and it has 4 -  1/4" steel balls inside. It is  1 1/4" diameter and  4 1/4 " long  and finished with a buffing of tripoli, white diamond and carnuba wax.

Nice job Jim! I jsut built a set for a new grandson. I need to get the project post up.
Good work! As usual.
How does it sound?  I've only made 1 rattle, I used popcorn. It wasn't as loud as I had hoped. I think that's more about the thickness of the wood.

Very thoughtful of you Jim, and very nice job on the turning, looks great.
Thanks you all for the nice comments!!

Hi Hairy, I think it all about the size and harness of the noise makers. I tried little BB's but they don't  make enough noise. The 1/4" balls hitting the wood are just right!!  They are set it a 3/4" round pocket. I did that with a ball nose router bit on each half. I cut apart old ball bearings and take out the balls and clean them up for things just like this.
