Cup and ball toy

Fairly quick project. The handle is white oak, the cup is apple, and the ball (first ball I’ve turned) is the mystery Indian pallet wood that is kinda cherry-like. Tung oil & shellac friction finish on the lathe, then a coat of T&T Varnish Oil.

Thanks to Jim Jakosh for making a similar toy and getting me thinking, “I could probably do that!”

May you have the day you deserve!

Looks like a good "thinking" toy to play while relaxing on the patio and pondering. Plock, swish plock, swish plock...Eureka!
After my sweetie saw it and had to try to catch the ball (she did, but it took a few tries), we decided rather than trying to figure out a kid to give it to, it’s just going to sit in the living room, and first person to say, “oh, my grandspawn would love that!” gets to take it home.

May you have the day you deserve!

Looks like fun—making and gifting.
These sort of toys are excellent for motor skills, love that a few are being made by makers on Craftisian

Neat!  And like the idea to give it to the first person who shows appreciation for the toy.
Nice work, Dave. How many tries before you caught the ball??

Nice work Dave, and I may be wrong but I think the hardest turning was the little ball.
Thanks folks!

Yeah, Barb. A lot of my stuff lately gets given away, either to local friends or also to strangers on the internet. I’ll post a giveaway about once a month on mastodon.

Jim, I think it was third try, maybe fourth. The ball is small enough compared to the hole in the cup that it might be too easy.

Tom, I’ve never turned a ball before, but once I figured out the workholding (turned a cavity in a piece of rock maple scrap, and used the cup live center on the tailstock), it wasn’t too bad. It just ended up a smaller ball than I had initially thought.
