A gift for the Grandson.
Grandson plays the guitar, jazz.  Plays in some of the clubs around Atlanta with various groups, such as Club Napoleons.   He was just accepted to be in the Jazz Ensemble of Georgia State Univ.    He is also getting his masters in music with Jazz as the main subject.   This is a young man, still single, who has a full time job as head of the AI department of a very large company.
Found this copy of the picture taken in 1958 by Art Kane for Esquire Magazine and was used as a centerfold for Esquires January 1959 Golden Age of Jazz issue.   Considered the most iconic photograph of Jazz history.
There are 57 great Jazz musicians in the photograph including  Count Basie, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Greer, Milt Hilton, Gene Krupa, Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, and more     There was a documentary made in 1994 of the photo and the occasion.

So my part a simple frame of 7/8" Butternut.  Picture is 12" x 16.5".  Frame is 15" x 19.5".   1/4" roundover on the front side edges.   Ryobi detail biscuit jointer with R3 biscuits used on the corners.   Painted black allowed to dry then sanded and buffed to give a worn and old look.   Glass over the picture.   Came close on the look.

I know the frame is just a simple frame but was a bit in awe of the photograph.

Hey...I like it. Butternut? Never heard of it. Where do you get this wood. Wow!
Nailed the color and effect. Works perfectly with the great photo!
Rick,  The butternut came from Wall Lumber Co.  Mayodan NC.
Butternut is Jugans cinerea comes from eastern USA.   Also called white Walnut, Oilnut, Nogal, Nogal blanco, and nuez meca.  Soft density, medium texture, usually fairly straight grain.   Fairly common in these parts.
Enjoyed working with it and usually keep a few bd.ft. on hand.
Thanks for the comments.

I agree with BB1, a great gift for your grandson particularly with his interest in jazz. Your part?, not just a simple frame, it's a memory for his lifetime.  Great picture selection & woodworking Grandpa.

Very Cool Ron...I love that Photo...I used to photograph several Jazz Band competitions a year for High Schools...that photo hangs in every Jazz Band Directors Office.  It was always revered.  Super job on the frame.
