How I built a Deadman that fits almost any workbench

Here’s a project I rescued from the old dust bin. Here I’m cutting out the dado for the bottom holder.

The wood is Cumaru. It’s a very hard wood from Brazil. It measures 3,330 LBf on the Janka scale.
My neighbor built a deck and a fence from it and threw out what was leftover. I took it.

I used an old broken f clamp to hold the deadman to the bench.

Dowels were added for extra strength.

I replaced the original handle that was on the clamp with a maple one so I could screw it through the lower part of the holding system. I then drilled a hole through the maple and the clamp stem. I removed the head and tip of a brass screw, put it through the hole in the handle and clamp stem, then I peened it to fasten the handle.

When I designed and built my workbench I allowed for an over hang of 2” plus for clamping.
It works great.
Thanks for making it this far and reading and viewing my project. And comments are always welcome.

Looks handy James, like the square handle profile for ease of torquing!

Something I've been needing to make for many years.
great bench accessory james.

this is something i added to my assembly bench for holding panels to work on.

Thanks Splinter. Square works good with sweaty palms. ✋

Thanks Pottz. Yours is much more complicated than mine. And a handy fixture. For larger panels I use a 5 gallon bucket which I got for free for spending $20. at (Harbor Freight)on the floor or what ever is handy, along with my bench vice. It’s a very sophisticated system. 🙄

although mine needs a board at least 9-1/2" wide.

Pottz, I thought you wrote 9-1/2 feet long. Then I read 9-1/2”😙
