Here I’m cutting out the dado for the bottom holder.
The wood is Cumaru. It’s a very hard wood from Brazil. It measures 3,330 LBf on the Janka scale. My neighbor built a deck and a fence from it and threw out what was leftover. I took it. It’s in my garage. I used an old broken f clamp to hold the deadman to the bench. Dowels were added for extra strength. I replaced the original handle that was on the clamp with a maple one so I could screw it through the lower part of the holding system. I then drilled a hole through the maple and the clamp stem. I removed the head and tip of a brass screw, put it through the hole in the handle and clamp stem, then I peened it to fasten the handle. When I designed and built my workbench I allowed for an over hang of 2” plus for clamping.
On some projects I need to use 9’ boards and longer. I don’t want to run them through my jointer to square up and straighten out one of the edges before I cut it down at the table saw, so I use a large jointer plane.
It works great. Thanks for making it this far and reading and viewing my project. And comments are always welcome.
Thanks Pottz. Yours is much more complicated than mine. And a handy fixture. For larger panels I use a 5 gallon bucket which I got for free for spending $20. at (Harbor Freight)on the floor or what ever is handy, along with my bench vice. It’s a very sophisticated system. 🙄
Ducky: I thought about putting in a threaded insert screw but I couldn’t find one to fit the Harbor Freight F clamp screw I used. The clamp would no longer tighten. The handle slipped on the screw and wouldn’t get tight. I just threaded the screw through the wood. The wood is hard 3,330 on the janka scale and I don’t need a lot of clamping pressure to do what it needs to do. The thread width is 9.59mm. Here’s some photos or the old handle and the type of clamp the thread came from.
Hey JEMI, I often forget my meds which many times are my excuse, however, it seems like Pottz didn't... he probably took my meds, which has conflicted with his rationale.
Now that you mentioned you went au natural,
I am a great fan of the original Wood Whisperers wood threaders (now I believe are sold by Eagle).Sorry I have the set so selfishly I won't Google for link, however, rather than link to LJ, I'll bring my review across.
You are usually quite thorough in your posts and it was just a dig, as I thought it was an obvious omission for what I thought was an integral part of the jig.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD
Yup Ducky I should’ve mentioned that I used smaller bit then the screw to drill a hole through the wood, then screwed the the screw through it. Probably forgot to take my meds. 🤪
