3D Basket Weave Cutting Board

ive been wanting to do one for a long time so when my son requested one as a xmas gift i said, now is the time. i found the plans online at Calebs Fine Woodworking. 5 dollar download and print. this one is made from maple, walnut and cherry but wood choice is up to you. to do this your gonna need a band saw or do a lot of planing. but your also gonna need a drum sander or dont even try this. this board uses layers of walnut 1/8" and 1/16" which i dont think you could plane that thin ? for the glue up i used titebond 3 because it has a longer use time which when gluing up 79 pieces all at once you need. the finish s mineral oil applied until it stops soaking in. several liberal coats. rubber bumpers on the bottom. the plans called for 1/2" stock but i went with 3/4" because i figured why waste all that wood and it made for a bigger board. this one measures 14.25" x 24" and is 1-1/2" thick. here are some build pic's

this is the first glue up. your gonna need a few clamps !

the second glue up. walnut strips 1/8" and 1/16"
the third glue up. more thin walnut strips.

and final assembly.

after this cured for a day it was first sanded with a 6" bosch get375-6 on turbo mode to remove most of the rough glue. next it took well over 100 passes through the drum sander starting with 36 grit then 100 grit. final sanding was with a 5" ROS. so is it possible to do without a drum sander, i dont know but i sure dont wanna find out ! i changed sanding rolls twice. any questions please ask.

That was a quick build. Looks great
The 3D effect looks real. For me that would be hard to cut on. I’d think my knife would fall in it. I better keep my bow knife away from it. Nice work Pottz.

James McIntyre

The look of the pieces really appear 3D. Nicely done!

Wow, that's really nice! I wouldn't put a juice groove in it, personally.

The Other Steven

Can't see any gaps or alignment issues, looking FINE!

I'd worry about getting food stuck down in those pits and mixing with the blood (since you opted out of a blood groove)

Looks thick?
I also used my DS with a few boards, starting at 36. The higher grits were tough to prevent burning and you have end grain cherry! Nice all around and who doesn't need a fancy one like that?
thanks guys. well without the drum sander id still sanding. i started with 100 grit and quickly said, this aint gonna cut it. i happened to have a roll of 36 which i always thought, ill never use that !

Pretty Nice,
What are you going to put into all those square holes?

Figuring out how to do something you have never done is what makes a good challenge.

ha ha thats up to my kid. hey you notice how some of the maple are real light compared to the rest. what do you,  or anyone think. you saw the pic's of the lamination and how they were sliced off. should have all been the same. didn't notice until the oil went on.

Excellent work Pottz, this is one fine 3D cutting board. Like Splint said, no gaps anywhere.
This turned out great! Such a nice gift and now you have the plans to make more.
OT- thanks man. there were some tiny gaps but i sealed them with CA glue. dont want meat juices growing in there !
barb-thank you. MORE !!!! if someone will pay me about 300+ bucks for one 😁
