Mrytlewood Bench

this is a project from about 15 years ago way before i even belonged to LJ'S and never got around to posting. we were cleaning the carpets and had to move it so i figured get it out in the sun and take some pic's. this bench is made from a slab of oregon mrytlewood and a walnut base. the 3 strips on top are padauk that cover the screws that attach the legs. gives the appearance of through tenons without the work. sometimes i cheat. the last pic you can see the damage caused by post powder beetles which love mrytlewood up in oregon where this slab came from. i cut off as much as i could then filled all the holes and trails with CA glue. the finish was maloof oil which i mix myself. 1/3 of poly, linseed oil and tung oil.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

I agree with a couple of comments above, beautiful design and woods combination to create a very pleasing appearance.
I really like the through tenons on top, with the matching pegs on the leg joints, and the softness of all the edges and leg joints. One very fine bench.
Nice....that myrtle wood is beautiful!  well done...love the inlay!

OT-thanks my friend. the plugs are padauk which has turned brown over the years.
mike-actually this mrytle is pretty plain compared to some of the slabs i made tables from.

Pretty neat Pottzy, first a bed for your roses, water on tap and now a dinning table... what next?... a 85" coloured TV featuring "Home gardening"?

That’s one cool bench and substantial. What style would you characterize it as. Never mind I saw that it’s listed as contemporary. Nice work.
