Keepsake Box

i started out to make a leaf box but i didn't have any wood with the right kind of grain it needed to work, so i just went with a plain lid and will give it to my wife as a christmas gift. the box is maple and bubinga with a padauk top. in the video blake cuts out the parts with a cnc, which i dont have so i used a template and cut out with my router which worked fine. i pretty much followed his way of doing it. the worst part was sanding the inside on the spindle sander which took about an hour. i lasered my wifes name on the top. finish is 2 coats maloof blend and 5 coats of satin lacquer. size is 8" L X 4-1/2" W X 2-1/2" H.

this is the template made from 3/4 mdf.

after this glue up i sanded the inside before gluing on the bottom.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Hey there Pottz. . .great work!  I'm sure your wife will love it and treasure it since you made it for her.  Really a terrific outcome.  The maple and bubinga work really well together and I love to use padauk.  No matter how much I try, I can't keep it from oxidizing and turning a wonderful warm brown.  Sometimes the orange is just the ticket.   Ya done good!!!!

Nice box! Just think about the pain of sanding the inside if you didn't have that spindle sander.

Great work, Pottz.  Sanding the interior may have been challenging, but the results look flawless.  Nice job.

Very nice unique box Pottz, beautifully smooth, nice finish, and your wife's name engraved makes this a true gift from the heart. This she will cherish.

On a side note, regarding having to sand the interior, did you think to file the inside smooth prior attaching the bottom? That would have been my first thought, mainly I'd do anything to avoid sandpaper.
thanks bud. yes i sanded the inside on the spindle sander before attaching the bottom. had i not, well it wouldn't look as good as it does !
