Final Batch of Morse Code Cutting Boards (& a Couple Extra)

I have more Morse Code blanks left from my previous build. Rather than letting them sit around the shop I’m choosing to get them built. They blanks are all at least 6 inches long so this edition is six inches thick. The last one was 4 inches. While the Morse Code blanks are ready to go, I have to build up the chaos pieces. I have covered the process before – here is how this one is going.

The width of the blanks is set by the longest Morse Code word. With the blanks finished I set up the clamping order.

You can see the 3rd word up is shifted to the right. I glued the filler on the wrong end of the word. Oh well. Now I can begin gluing the block. I glue one layer at a time. I’m using plastic blocks to keep everything aligned while clamping.

Several glue-ups later the main block is done. About half way through I leveled the block. The small differences in size had accumulated and there was a bit of a bow across the face.

The next step is to add chaos panels to each end of the block.

Next I add some border panels. I have a layer of maple surrounded by a layer of cherry. Now I can split the 6 inch block into 2 blocks 3 inches thick. I’m using my tall fence to help keep the block aligned.

I make a pass on all 4 faces and finish the job with a pull saw.

Now I can level the faces with the drum sander.

After I square up all the faces I have 2 blocks ready to slice apart.

The same process is used to end up with 6 cutting boards.

I have enough material left to make a couple smaller boards as well.

That wraps up the build notes for this set. They are always much appreciated as gifts.

Thanks for the comments!

DL - you got even - I had to translate that!!
Very cool Steve!  I still use mine all the time😎
Love the way you batch these, making one would take 80% of the same time.
Awesome and mind bending Steve!
Cool boards, Steve!!!

Neat boards, regardless of what the code says.   To lazy to look.it up.

Ron

HUGE boards. Is there a reason they are so thick, look like small butcher blocks.

I like the Chaos jumble, these are impressive to see

Me too!

Neat project!!
Wow

I'm not sure how you did that.

Very cool tho

Petey

Very nice.  You have a lot more patience than I do.  I suppose next, you will do QR codes.

--Nathan, TX. Hire the lazy man. He may not do as much work but that's because he will find a better way.

Like Petey said "WOW!", those are very unique and enough to make you go cross eyed when using. Be sure to pay close attention when using, 10 fingers come I  real handy.
Happy New Year! Steve.

Clever idea, Steve! And well-implemented.

May you have the day you deserve!

Oh boy!  That’s a wow. After studying for a couple of minutes my brain needs a nap.
Those are great!  Seeing the process makes my head hurt, but you seem to have mastered it.  Really nice project to end the year.
Thanks for the comments!
Ken - good to hear it's in use. One of that edition is only used for charcuterie but the other 3 see regular use. Of that set of 4, one is in Virginia, one is in Scotland, and 2 are local.
Splinter - these are too much work to make one at a time. I wouldn't even try without the drum sander
George - the big block gets sliced up into thinner boards
Ron & BB1  - I can share translation if someone really wants to know but I'd rather leave it as a puzzle
Nathan - I actually worked on a QR Code plan with our last name but I've set it aside. Too complicated - even for me 🙂
Others - thanks again. I can't think of a better place to share what we do.

I've got a couple more ideas that work as a large block that gets sliced. We'll see if I get around to them. At some point everyone has enough cutting boards!
I like those Steve. I wish my dad was still alive. He was a radio operator in WWII and would have enjoyed these.

Cool project eRasmus, and great write...

Thought my "dyb, dyb, dyb" signals badge days, were wasted and that cask-o-vino finally affected the brain in translation of,

then I read the fine print,
I have enough material left to make a couple smaller boards as well.
so no coffee enema enigma machine needed.

You could slap a board with "-.-. .-. .- ... .... --. ..- .- .-. -.." on your wooden car.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Thanks for the comments!

DL - you got even - I had to translate that!!
I just realized that I borked the second word- missing the second dit on the third letter. Should be ... .... .. _
