Kitchen "Volcano" !!

This is a holder (volcano) for kitchen utensils that can be kept handy on the counter.
This started as a round mesquite branch with a crotch attached that  I was given to see what could be make out of it .  I cut the straight part free and rounded it up on the lathe and found it had this punky stripe in it. I cut out the punky stuff with a die grinder and filled it with black epoxy  ( had to build dam around it). Then I turned the shape and bored out the center and finished it with a 3 stage buff and wax. The black epoxy did not shine up very well with the Tripoli and white diamond. I'll take it home to be finished with my plastic buffing material and polish. Being that this was pretty green wood, I don't expect it to be round when I get to  Michigan with it. It is 5 1/2" diameter at the base and 5 1/2" high.

That's a nice save! A lot of people would have given up.
Nice looking utensil holder, hopefully it will keep it's shape.
Real nice.
Too bad there wasn’t a way to core it and get multiple pieces.
Andy Cole showed his coring technique to the Space Coast Woodturners but his stock wasn’t nearly as deep.
Nice! You're having some fun.🙂
Looks like a fun experiment, Jim.

May you have the day you deserve!

Love it Jim!  Well done...very functional

Thank you all for the nice comments.
Hi Gary G. You would not want what was in the center of this log! I only cut out so much of the rotten wood to fill with epoxy. There was more rotten wood in the center!!
