Antique Phonograph Music Box

I found a bunch of the American Lotus pods on the beach in Grand Haven, Michigan and got an idea for the speaker on an antique phonograph like my grandmother had. I went a step further to install a music box movement in it. The box and the arm holding the needle and speaker are walnut and the base is box elder. The record is black Corian. The needle holder, the crank and the on/off lever are made of brass. I made a short You Tube video of it running:

Jim,

Great idea and execution!

Very clever, Jim. You were definitely seeing outside the box on this project.

I like the Corian record. You’re going to make some Phantom of the Opera fan very happy.
Very neat project Jim.

Jeff

Pretty neat, very imaginative.
Thanks for all the nice comments. I love the Phantom of the Opera and the music from it.    I wish I could have found a music box with more notes to it!

Awesome project! I love when folks incorporate natural items like that pod into a project…especially when it mimics something otherwise made by mass production. What a neat creation…

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks, Ryan. My brain is always in high gear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!5

Great job Jim. I think a lot of us would have just walked past those pods. Your eye is always on the lookout for something to either add to a project, or just plain use it as the project. Creative.
Very creative Jim. How did you cut the corian?

Dr. Quackner

Thanks George and Dr Quackner!!

Hi Doctor. Corian cuts very easily on a table saw or band saw and routs easily too. This piece I finished on the metal lathe but I have cut a lot of it on the wood lathe with just HSS tools........ Carbide was not needed . I have found that I can get cut offs pretty cheap at countertop shops. But many of them don't use it any more. I have a good stock of it now thanks to my buddy Doug Scott!!!!!!
