Second of a Pair of Commissioned Boxes

Made this small Box as per requested... Similar to the first one, (picture #4), but not the same...
Construction is box joints, with dowel-pinned corners for the sides

These two boxes, the top and bottom were glued directly to the sides...

More room is obtained inside the box that way rather than the top and bottom inset into a dado in the sides...
It definitely saves a little time too, as it's only necessary to quickly flush-cut and then round-over the top and bottom...
Hinges were drawn, drilled, and sawn out...

A small Knob was cut and attached...

Lastly, a partitioned Tray was made, and brackets were glued inside to hold the Tray...
Woods used were Mahogany for the Sides, Poplar Top & Bottom,
with White Oak 'Hardware'... The Tray is made from Red Oak 'Sides' and Poplar Bottom...
Tray Brackets are Chestnut...
Finish was an experiment... I was all out of wipe-on Polyurethane, considered buying more but-
#1) I have not been real pleased with the results lately (it seems like they've thinned and diluted the product)
and #2) The cost is outrageous!
Anyway, I never wanted to be one of THOSE guys, who mix up their own "secret finish formula",
but Floor Polyurethane was thinned with Mineral Spirits and gave fairly satisfactory results...

Nice, like the wrap around grain.

Ron

Very nice work!

I like the tray.

Petey

Great work on the joinery, solid!

I'm in the same camp with finish prices, poly diluted down with MS makes for a good wipe on.

nice work. i love those wood hinges !

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.
