This is just a simple quick project. I wasn't gonna post but ive seen many simple projects that have inspired me to make so i figured why not. The one on the left i had for quite awhile so i figured while i was finishing the new one id refinish the old. I already had the bearing plate and i thought it would be nice to have one for the coffee table and the dining table when we entertain. Both made from mahogany and finished with General Finishes High Performance water based poly satin. Gave em 4 coats and it made a nice finish but im still not sold on water based finishes. Dries super fast. I did 4 coats sanding between in a few hours.

Nice Pottz, good look'en Lazy Susans.
Curiosity question: what is your concern and / or dislike with water based polyurethane?  I plan to use it on a project I'm just completing, wondering if it has significant downsides. Thanks
thanks guys !
OT-  ive always been an oil finish guy so going water is a big change for me . this water based dried very fast. im more used to an oil finish where i coat the wood then wipe it off. i just find the richness of the finish much better with oil. just my preference.

Mmmm...very nice! ...I see some cheese, prsuto and olives on them, hehe

Thanks Pottz. Now that you mentioned it,  I'm guessing the oil remaining in the wood provides a level of chatoyency that water can't. Purely a matter of preference.
Looks great!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

IMO water based has it's place. (easy cleanup, no real odors when using)
Oil gives that amber tone which will really get the color out in darker woods. WB provides very little color color changes and looks rather "cold" on the darker woods, but for light stuff like pine or maple I think it has its benefits.

Agree with WB drying too fast (esp. in dry climates). When I do use it, I'll spray versus brush.
thanks guys.
it dries very fast.

yeah id say spraying would work the best. one thing that is nice is the lack of odor which the wife always complains about projects brought into the house.

I dont suppose you used your dead sander on it by any chance?

Regards Rob

Even if it doesn't work, it still will securely hold a 1/2 sheet and allow you to manually sand with it!
no it's long gone rob.

Nicely done.

I used to use GF High Performance on almost everything - including a kitchen table. On that project, I let it "cure" for the recommended time (was several weeks), but haven't found the durability to be what I hoped. We use cloth placemats and small trivets for coffee mugs (to avoid any issues with heat). Need to get it sanded down and try another finish at some point. As Splintergroup noted, there are definite benefits of water-based related to the odor, color, and time.

yeah i agree barb, it's just not the finish ill go to ? for lack of odor, yeah it's great but ill deal with odor for more durability !

Anybody know where Pottzys dead sander is resting?

Very nice Pottz. They are also good for videoing smaller projects from all angles.
