This 16-segment bowl is made from walnut, cherry, and what I was told is some type of cedar salvaged from an old piano. The bowl measures 7 inches in diameter and 3¼ inches high.
I made a mistake on this one. While shaping the base, I cut a second recess that was deeper than it should have been. Later, when I drilled the hole for my logo coin with a Forstner bit, the center point broke through the bottom of the bowl. I hadn't left enough wood in the base, and it looked like the bowl might be ruined.
After thinking about it for a while, I came up with a way to save it. Maybe something etched in the bottom and filled epoxy might do it. Because the laser head is so large compared to the bowl, it could only move about half an inch in any direction before it contacted the sides and moved the bowl. That meant whatever I engraved had to be very small.
The solution was three tiny ants engraved into the bottom of the bowl, filled with black epoxy. Not only did it hide the mistake, but it also gave the bowl a bit of personality. I figured it would make a fun snack bowl when we have company. As the snacks disappear, someone might eventually notice the ants crawling around the bottom. I thought it was a funny surprise, so I went with it.

What a great solution! You know what they say: A master craftsman isn’t someone who produces perfect work, it’s someone who can hide their mistakes so no one knows they’re there! Nicely done.

It's when you are at the movies with your girlfriend and the popcorn is gone. Poke a hole in the bottom and insert your best friend. Next time she reaches for popcorn, SURPRISE! I saw that in a movie. Don't remember the name of the movie. No graphic detail, thankfully.
