A friend brought me this broken piece of coconut and said, “I thought you might be able to use this to make something.” It had been kicking around for probably a year when I found it the other day. I guess because I’ve been spending so much time on the lathe lately, it gave me an idea.
It measures 9" tall by 4.25" wide and has 12 segments per row. I divided each row by using copper wire to burn a groove into the wood, which gave it a nice little detail between the segments.
It’s finished with shellac. The stem is made from maple and walnut, and I cut a piece of leather to use as the hanger.
The top also unscrews, so I guess you could hide something inside. Not that I would know anything about that. That's where I hide my money from my wife. 😂
From broken coconut to birdhouse. Not exactly what my friend had in mind, but I think it worked out pretty well.
Thanks guys, but as Steven mentioned I really wish that I intended to make it look like an acorn. My friend actually mentioned the same thing. It would've been more creative to shape the bottom to look like an acorn and not burn the lines in.
