I’ve got a flocking question!

For those of you that use flocking, what’s your preferred system?

Do you use colored undercoating? 3M spray adhesive? Something else?

Do you use a flocking tube or something else?

Set up? Containment? Any other thoughts?

Let’s memorialize this stuff for future use…and Go!

Hi Ryan. I usually do velvet inlay and seldom do flocking. However when I do Flocking I use this from Lee Valley. Simple and affordable. But ya gotta do it in a box or flock will be everywhere!
Which adhesive do you use, Rick?

Being a great user of flock, it was hard not to comment and share my views.
For small areas/jobs I use the "Mini Flocker",

however, for larger areas and inside box sides I use this air gun, dialed down to 25 PSI,

I use paint as close to the color of the flock,

that way if you do an oopsie, the paint camouflages the lack of flock... should not happen unless the paint starts to dry or is too thin.  The paint has to be thick/heavy enough to "glue" the flock but not enough to cause blobs/runs... unfortunately, oopsies are hard to patch... sand back and redo if possible.

I do it with a fence around it in a spotless tray to recover any excessive over spay, and there's plenty if done right.

It is great for larger boxes without visible seams like you'd get with felt,

great for those awkward shapes,

however, its more cosmetic than a cushioning surface,

Having mentioned felt, I often use felt since I discovered it cuts beautifully to shape on my laser,

though without the laser, flock used to be the only main alternative.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Wow...its the Duck!!!!  See that didn't burn to post again did it?  Welcome back!

Inthe past, I've used the felt/adhesive flocking we'll call it.  Back in the old LJ days someone told me to adhere it to thin mount board and cut with a hatchet paper cutter.....you can fit it perfect then dab pva glue to the back and adhere it....you can get a perfect fit....I have always wanted to try the spray on flocking but was too chicken....I didn't want to screw up a project in the final step....as usual Duckie provided a good tutorial for what and how to use it.

When I did do any blocking used the Donjur brand of adhesive and blocking of the same color, applied flocking with the mini tube.   Always worked fine.   Tried to do it inside a large box to control spillage.

Good to see the Duck!   Missed the wit and talent!

Ryan....I use this one. Looks like a few here use it.
Hi Ryan

I have done a lot of flocking in the past, now if I want that lined look I'll razor cut Leather, before flocking. When I did flock I found that Donjers adhesive paint a royal PIA. I do use their flock, but if you tried a fair quality or better Acrylic paint, and the Donjers you would never buy the high priced Donjers again. Most craft stores (I use Hobby Lobby) will carry colored Acrylic paint that will match the Donjer colors. When I tried to use their paint I had real trouble getting any color except black to adhere. No problems with the Acrylic. I read of a lot of people who agree, and a lot who just use the Donjer stuff, maybe we are holding our tongues wrong?

One thing for sure to make sure you do. You have made a nice project, and this is about the last step, so don't mess up your hard work, instead just make a smallish bottom, with a side pin nailed to it, and finish that with the flock. Chances are you will back off, and do more practice. Problems can occur first with painting on the adhesive, and this is where the Acrylic will shine, much easier to control, plus it dries a lot faster, with no stink. Then the right amount of flock. A lot suggest just flooding it, let it dry, and shake out the excess. I never found that a good look, so there is a right amount, and until you see it, it's hard to describe, but once you see it, it's like a bike.

Mike I used a matt cutter, like for picture frames, worked well for me on solid material, plus easier to store than a paper cutter, or I use a rotary cutter on one of the green boards made for them, along a thin ruler, but I can see it working with a sharp blade on the hatchet cutter.

Duck, just plain good to see you typing here. Be Well
I forgot. A lot of folks I know that do a lot more crafts than I, have dumped Donjor for high prices, and getting steeper all the time for this place, theirs is Rayon same as Donjers. I think you might want to stay away from Nylon, too much static cling, especially in dry conditions. They do sell Acrylic paints as well, but if you decide to go this way, do a price comparison, because at the Lobby I never felt it was expensive.
