I am slowly on the mend from the foot surgery.  It is tough being non weight bearing on a foot and learning to do everything.  We had a temporary ramp installed out front so I can get out of the house to appointments.  I get a cast this Thursday.

Thanks to all the folks posting projects which helps keep me sane.

The weather has been terrible.  We had very strong storms go thru yesterday and knocking out power for 26 hours but the whole house generator kicked on and worked perfect.  The wind gusts knocked down the power poles a bit down the highway.  What a mess for them to fix.

Hope your casting today goes without incident!  Since Helene swept through a year and a half ago, we've seen basically nothing.  Over the past couple months wind has been inconsequential and rain has been far to close to zero.  The rain has gotten better over the past few days but we're still well behind where we should be.  After looking at the damage from all the above ground wires, Duke energy among others has zero initiative to bury anything, regardless of what happens, they're making money on it, and that includes repairing poles and lines.
Suddenly losing any ability is a royal PIA. I lost all of my strength, and had to relearn how to, stand up, and walk, in 2025. Bad outcome from a cancer drug Immunotherapy set me back big time. Currently if I want to do anything that takes longer than 1 minute I have to use my, new to me, electric wheelchair to do it. I'm finding just trying to walk farther, and be on my feet longer is helping rebuild my strength, and in turn has helped my mental health a LOT. It sux being where you are currently but keep plugging, and soon you will be walking around like you used to.

Storms are becoming part of our reality, not sure if there actually a lot more of them now, or if they have always happened, we just didn't know about ones more than 100 miles from home, but with always on, 24/7 news, and advances in media, now we know about the weather across the entire country. Of course the media only wants to tell sad tales, so we see destruction, rather than the happy ending stories they choose not to broadcast.

Hopefully it is a "walking cast" and that will allow weight bearing, best of luck buddy.
It has been 5 weeks and still in a rigid splint and will get actual cast in two weeks.  Not a walking cast and non weight bearing for another five weeks.  Learning to deal with it and some muscles very sore doing things differently.

Praying for your recovery progress. One thing I would suggest is to line up at least one session with a physical therapist. The insights can be so helpful in regaining balance and range of motion. Although at times the exercises can seem "simple," retraining muscles is so important. Also, can be good to know typical soreness vs anything that might be a concern or doing too much.
BB1....your suggestion is very good.  I was in the hospital for six days and then home.  I am on Medicare and I had at home nurse visits, occupational therapy and physical therapy for several weeks. The physical therapist had me doing exercises and left me with ones to do.  The occupational therapist was fantastic helping us figure out how to do things and use my knee rover and other things.  This was all a huge help. Just so much you do not know how to do one one leg.
glad to hear your well takin care of birds. many people are stubborn and think they dont need the PT but ya gotta do what they tell you or the recovery just takes twice as long. stay strong and you'll running a marathon soon 😁

Hey Birdseye.

Hopefully it is all going good,, and you are making strides toward getting back on your feet full time. Saying a prayer for you Brother.
Thanks George...Things are going OK.   I saw the doctor last week and he thinks things are progressing properly.  I have about three more weeks and then a walking boot.
Birdseye- great to have a good report on your progress. Based on my experiences with having to wear a boot, one aspect to consider when shifting to the walking boot is your footwear on the other foot. Keeping the height the same/similar to the boot side helps to avoid imbalances (which can cause hip discomfort).
Really makes one appreciate good health, glad to hear your mending is on track and soon enough you'll be back to your routine!
BB1...I will certainly keep that in mind as I habe a bad back with lumbar fusion and a left hip replacement.  Uneven walking could really cause an issue and pain.
Birdseye- the recommendation was originally from a good friend who also was a sports medicine doctor. So many "little things" to think about to avoid creating new issues while the original area heals. Sounds like you have a good medical team - so valuable.
I have an excellent doctor at Rush Orthopedics in Chicago.  However, I have learned so.much about how to deal with being one footed from people like all of you, my occupational.therapist, the guy who installed some safety grab bars in the bathroom and my sister who has Bern through this before.  It is amazing what you need to know.  Of course, being older, it is just physically more difficult to get around.  I would not have survived this without my wife who insists on me doing thong the right way and has been carrying for me.
I've about worn my Wife out with my recovery. What I can say from experience is appreciate everything she does, and keep thanking her for it. :-)
