I saw this article today. I’m sure that Sawstop gear is excellent but this Gass guy needs a slapping. Good luck taking on Bosch, mind you, that takes balls.

I don’t know all the in and outs of patent law, but to his credit, Gass basically invented, patented and marketed one of the biggest safety innovations to ever hit the tool market. I think he initially offered to license the invention to Bosch among other table saw manufacturers and they turned him down. Now Bosch comes out with their own version of a flesh sensing technology…..If I was Gass, I’d be upset too.

well, it matters little to me but the bosch thing is different. good luck to him.

yep, it’ll be interesting to see how it turns out. Bosch certainly has a lot of $$$ behind it!

Well whats funny is I heard the patent has expired and thats why the companies have started putting out their design of the brake.

I imagine if Bosch win it’ll open a floodgate of braking tech which will be good for everyone.

Patent’s can be renewed for up to 20 years, as to the law suite I’ll leave that up to the courts.
I’ve never understood the movement to bash Gass,so he tried to get his technology mandatory on all table saws ,this is something that has been done by many companies in the past with their inventions, people like Edision. I think there are many folks that have been avoided great injuries due to his great invention. I think it’s great that Bosch has entered the safer saw market.

While I think Mr. Gass is a jerk, he can’t be called dumb. He has a doctorate in physics as well as a law degree (he is a patent attorney). I suspect he has some insight that we lesser mortals don’t see, but I can’t help but wonder if the real reason of the lawsuit if to get mega corp Bosch to offer him about 10 times what his company is really worth just to get the SS patents. I hope Bosch hasn’t infringed and hands him a legal comeuppance…that said, I am a happy SS owner.

I wish there was an accessory that you could buy to retrofit any brand tablesaw… Ie: my old Unisaw!

To each their own Charlie,no one can tell us how we want to work, it’s to the individual and the approach we want to take when working with power tools.
I’ve been woodworking for 30 years a still have all my fingers too. I’m still working at 67 and wish I was retired. As to Saw Stops go,I have used them at the school where I teach woodworking and they are very fine machines plus the safety factor.
Do I concentrate when using a saw stop you bet, I know a couple 30 + year woodworkers that have had their first injuries on the table saw after using one all of those years ,they use to say that it was nonsense to buy a Saw stop all you have to do is focus on what your doing, after one of them getting injured he now owns A saw stop.
I don’t own a Saw Stop because I can’t afford one ,but I know that even with proper safety measures and focus It’s posable to get hurt on a table saw especially as we get older.

I worked with several table saws: sears contractor saw, Bosch 4100, Powematic 66.

Sometimes ago my wife gifted me a sawstop professional… to make sure I don’t chop my fingers.

I was upset at the beginning because I was about to buy a unisaw which at the time was reviewed to be better than the sawstop.

Well over the years I have 4 cartridges and blades ruined. None came in contact with my flesh.
2 of the set got ruined due to rushing setup and the other 2 I have no idea why.

Besides that I must say it’s a great tablesaw to work with.
-Assembly was idiot proof.
-Fence is good
-Dust collection is excellent
-almost no vibration
-cut is accurate; even more when when I give it some TLC
-Plenty of power ( I really put it through a lot)
-The hydraulic base is superb

I learned to like it.

Yes there are some annoyances with 2 different cartridges for dado and regular blades, different inserts. Key for cutting metal, broken cast iron, etc…
But in my opinion it is much better than the rest of the saws I have worked with.

I know what you mean about other things in the shop can hurt you ,but this is not one of the other tools. I know there are some manufacturers that have high price points and are catering to people with a lot more disposable income than I have. High price has always been a point made against Saw Stop saws but comparable models of other saws actually cost more.About Saw stops being made in Taiwan ,I doubt there are any saws on the market that are not made in Taiwan or China. I think you or anyone else who has issues with the way DR. Gass does business are certainly entitled to your opinions . The way I think about Who invented Saw Stop or who invented any other injury saving technology, is more power to them for helping folks,I could care less about their politics .
I know at the High school shop that my adult woodworking class is held, two kids within the first two weeks of having their new Saw stops were saved from serious injury due to the saw’s technology.
You certainly are entitled to your point of view.

I was running 2″ × 3/8 " x 30 " pieces through my 4 inch jointer planner , I had the back stop set at 45% , I was just knocking the square edge off the 4 corners of the pieces . things were going good and I kind of got going faster and faster . Well the piece snagged on something and stopped . My hand slipped off the piece . The tip of my ring finger on my left hand is is at about 45% and the tip of my middle finger got cut up but healed nicely . This accident was fully on me , It was going so smoothly that I let my guard down . I use a lot more caution now.

Wheaties

Wow that sounds like a real terrible accident Bruce ,I hope you’re okay now.
