Project Information
my second "attempt" at making a lidded jar.went pretty well until the end when what i thought was a good friction fit of the jar to the lid.i was finishing the bottom and well it went flying breaking the lip off the lid.lucky there was enough to work with and i was able to turn it down and get a good lid.lesson learned.this was made from mahogany.3-3/4" H X 5" D.rings are black jel stain, finished with 3 coats arm r seal semi gloss.knob was an old cabinet knob i painted satin black.

Fine looking wooden jar. Will make a nice accessory for the top of your g & g hall table.

Nice save on the lid. Where do you buy your Armor Seal?

James McIntyre

thanks. i get it from a local supplier near me. hudson and west in torrance.  a woodworkers dream store. they carry a full line of hardwoods, finishes, tools, plywoods, you name it. and they only sell top of the line products. check em out, might be too far for you ? im in gardena only about 4 mile s away.

I will check out the store. I drive to Anaheim from Cerritos so it may not be that far. I buy my hardwood from Austin Hardwoods in Anaheim.

Good looking Jar. Never figured out while some people call them boxes?

I know you made this a while ago but one way to get around the spacing problem is to make them different sizes progressively starting at one end and getting bigger or smaller, or start from the middle doing the same thing.
yeah great idea. had it not flown off the lathe it would have been fine ! 😂

Reminds me of a bee hive or something for some reason. Honey jar maybe? Nice job.

Nicw work.  Did you stain the whole thing first and then remove the high spots to expose the wood, or did you stain the rings after it was all shaped?
stained after it was done then sanded to remove any bleed over.
