Book-matched Olive Elm Stash Box
This is my first real veneered box. Each face and the lid are book-matched Olive Elm veneer with the solid walnut edges/ the lid is hinged with hidden steel pins. I learned a great deal about dealing with veneer without vacuum bag....it can be done. I used baltic birch as a substrate....that was a good choice. I have a great respect for craftsmen who work in veneer.

I agree with the baltic birch core. In my case I learned that it is the right way to go after using MDF as a core - very bad idea. It was an invitation to warp.

Very nice! Can someone explain why mdf warps with veneer? I’ve heard that a couple times and don’t really understand it.

A beaut JB! Great way to mirror the book match with the divider.
MDF (and any other wood) will warp when veneered unless you add a "backing" veneer to the opposite side.
That said, if the panel is thin enough, any framing will hold it flat so boxes can often get away without the backing.
Since MDF doesn't have any grain for rigidity, The balance is even more crucial (same species, grain type, etc.)
Even the gluing process can add a bias.
MDF is nice to use because it is a great surface for veneer if done right, but aside from use in panels it doesn't have much going for it in the way of structural integrity.

I cut some thick veneer that I glued to a thin piece of core wood, trying to make my own plywood "just 'cause"
The panel warped significantly, but formed a perfect arc which will make for a great treasure chest style box someday.
In the end, you can do everything by the "book" and the wood will still do what ever it wants. Me thinks most metal workers and machinists originally were woodworkers and switched over from wood because of this 😀
