Small Display Cabinets

Of all things to collect, one of the things my wife collects is old meat grinders, and she is especially fond of the small toy, miniature, and salesman's samples.  I made her a couple of small cabinets.  The red one is #1 Poplar and painted and the other one is Walnut.  I got used to using flush mount hinges on all of the other cabinets I made but I wanted to try to install the hinges on the Walnut one the proper way.  Somewhere along the way I ended up doing it the wrong way, it's bothered me every time I look at the cabinet but that's the way it is.

That's a nice looking pair of cabinets. Quite a unique collection to go in them!
Thanks Steve, you know what they say, "Happy Wife, Happy Life!"

odd collection but quite interesting.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Nicely done! What’s the insert on the poplar one made of? Copper with a patina?

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks Ryan!  It's punched tin with some sort of patina, i get them on Amazon, for pie safes, etc.

Nice "rustic" looking display cases! Glass door panels would show off the contents, but that punched tin is what makes the case steal the show 👍
These cabinets are very nice reproductions of early America, well done. As for the hinges, there is no "right way", unless of course you mount these to open in - that won't work.
Hinges mounted on the outside are meant to be ornamental, I like the look of the L hinge, but the other also looks fine. It's a matter of personal taste.
Thank you Splinter appreciate it.

Oldtool, thanks for your comment.  I am going to try insetting the hinges at my next opportunity.  YouTube first for a lesson.

Came out great. I don’t notice the hinges until I read the story.

I remember my mother using one of those grinders. My favorite recipe was ground up pickles and Bologna sandwiches. It’s funny how your project brought those fond memories back.

Last week I was even shopping for one on line to make that old recipe. Tell your wife she has a great collection. 😊

Thanks James, those sandwiches are still popular today.  A variation of it is the ground bologna and pickle with a slice of cheese wrapped in tinfoil and heated up in a campfire.

Very nice cabinet Dave, they are well suited for the collection of grinders. I remember helping my mother as a kid grinding meats for one thing or another. And yes the baloney and pickle sandwiches are tasty.

Great pair of cabinets, with authentic period look. We had a 'mincer'  as it was called in the UK, when I was a kid. Roast meat joint on Sunday, sliced cold meat and leftover mashed potatoes on Monday, and, if their was any meat still left, then mincemeat rissoles on Tuesday!  Happy days. Thanks for the memory.
Thanks Eric, I appreciate your comment.

Marburg, Thank you and nice memories.

My mom had one of those grinders.  Thats when i knew a bad meal was coming.

No idea what she did with it

Like Eric said. My mother used to let us help her with the meat grinder. I would turn the crank and my big brother would push in the food.

Ever time I see my brother I feel guilty. We were never allowed to use that thing again.
