Cross Night Light

Project Information
Wood And Materials Used
Mystery wood-small rotted log gifted to me. Came from Central Texas, aunts backyard so maybe Live Oak. 2 part Epoxy and food coloring to stabilize the rotted wood.
Tools Used
Bandsaw, table-saw, planer, drill oress
Location
NE TN

While visiting my Aunt in Central TX over Thanksgiving she insisted I take what she referred to as her log with a cross. Just a rotted old log with checks in the shape of a cross.

Two days after leaving my aunts house, to head back to TN, I got word that my aunt had passed away.
I sliced a couple of boards from the log with which I made crosses for my cousins, her 5 children and I cut several cookies from the end with the cross, which I filled with teal epoxy( the color for ovarian cancer).

After stabilizing a couple of boards that I sliced off with epoxy, I essentially built a box with the cross on opposite faces.

Simple base that the body fits over( slight interference fit). Bought a pre wired and switched candelabra socket from big box.

a bit of sanding, a coat of walnut wood restore and several coats of wax. Hard to get good pics of the true blue teal color when lit.

Nothing fancy, but a great remembrance and as a night light, something I can see each day.

Such a nice remembrance project.  Wonderful to create gifts for others as well.
Very nice little night light Dan, Well done and cool effects. Sorry about the loss, and you remembered others with this piece.

Main Street to the Mountains

Very cool.  The central shape is a bit like an inkblot.  You can see all kinds of things in it.

Sorry for your loss.

Cool project DB... and also a very cool write up.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Thanks Pottz.

Moke, thanks and yah, Howard’s is one of the simple go-tos for me.

Thanks Splint. As we look back, we all have influencers in our life, she was one of mine.

Appreciate your comments, Ron.
That’s a nice tribute. Nicely done.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Thanks BB1.

Eric , appreciate your comments. I kind think there was a purpose behind the old chunk of wood.

Swirt, thanks. Yah, I agree. I think the bias for the cross is due to my aunts naming the old log.

Steve and LBD,  appreciate you commenting.
