Lightbox

My wife and I stopped in this gift shop in Plainfield, Il. that had all hand made items and we bought this glass with a jellyfish molded inside and an LED light box that changes colors to mount it on. They also sold these little square black boxes to put them in and I said I can make one for them. So this is what I came up with.

It started as six staves of red gum wood and then I turned it round and put ends in it. The bottom end is some plain red gum and has a round mortise in it to hold it for the final turn to shape. The top is six segments of red gum that was turned to fit into the top of the tube.

After the box was finished being turned, I carved out the front opening to line up with the inside flats on the staves and drilled the clearance hole in the back for the cord end. The light that changes colors in embedded inside the bottom

The box is finished with 8 coats of Formby's Tung Oil and the inside is black flocked.

That idea gives me an idea 🤠

My wife makes glass stuff to fit those black LED bases, but I think the bases are butt-ugly. Great way to dress them up!
I bet that looks much better than the store bought one!
 Thanks, Steve and Bruce.!

Hi Bruce. I agree , I like the idea but I had to hide that black box!!

Beautiful and I think that may be one of the coolest lights I've seen. Excellent job !!!
Wow Jim, that is so cool looking. I really like the piece you made even without the glass art the box itself is beautiful.

Thanks, Mel and John!!

I was given that red gum from a friend of mine way west of Grand Rapids. I asked to be on the list if he ever trims off any more big branches.
