1951 Ford Pickup modified from original T&J's plans

Here is my latest model made mainly from American Cherry. The black parts are ebonized timber and the wheel rims are made from holly.

I set out with the idea of making more of a working model than the original plan depicted.

As some of you know the original plans were of a basically solid wood model with the wheels as the only moving parts. And the wheels only rotated.

Without drawing up new plans I had these ideas in my head and I just wanted to build the extra features in as I went along.

The process took much longer than I expected because a lot of ideas did not work straight away and many parts were binned and new parts made.

The modifications that I made are:

  1. Steerable front wheels operated by the steering wheel.
  2. Both doors have tiny wooden hinges and operating door locks.
  3. The cab is now tapered from front to back as it should be and not just a rectangle as in the original.
  4. The bonnet/hood is hollowed out and opens via a concealed wooden hinge where the air intake cowl for the cab would normally be.
  5. There is now a V8 engine nestled in the engine bay complete with battery etc.
  6. There is also a transmission with drive shaft.
  7. The flat board chassis of the original has now been replaced by chassis rails and cross members.
  8. The front windscreen now is curved top and bottom with rounded corners where the original was just square.

The model has been finished with Tung Oil

Wow! Awesome!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

same time as the Zephyr was released I wonder do they have a kit for it?

Great job PJ... good to see you back posting... if it was drinks, the wait in between would be intolerable.

That's a Mk.I I believe RC.. my first car was a MK.II that I paid $200 for... Got booked over 100MPH in it, more than the bailman could keep up with.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Absolutely gorgeous Peter.

The only thing better work be a real one in the garage.

What a beautiful execution! I would have loved to see this in real life. I am impressed by the wooden hinges and the steering mechanism also appeals to the imagination.  Would you mind sharing with me how you made the hinges and steering?
