Junk Wood

Walking on my property a few years ago I saw a chunk of wood on the ground. Picket it up, it looked like any old chunk of rotten wood.  Took it home.  Put in in a container, and poured aluminite over it and let it sit for a couple weeks.  No pressure pot, nothing special done to it.   Took it out and decided to turn it, just to see.   What a pleasant surprise.  This is what I ended up with.  It is a little over 3" tall and 3" diameter.  I have no idea what the wood it, maybe if was a knot out of some tree.  I know mulberry can be very colorful, we have lots of mulberry trees around.  Unfortunately it has since turned brown still pretty. but not as flashy.

Beautiful wood! Nice save.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Wow, that is very attractive. Sure is sad when such a beautiful piece changes color. Nice job on giving that scrap a chance to be so amazing.

Nice turning. It always adds to the fun when you find a piece like that.

I have found that to stop the darkening of wood like that I need to seal it with a few coats of Poly or a salad bowl finish like Behlen's or Generals.  The latter is a wipe on and easily applied with a piece of good quality paper towel. I use the blue mechanics towels and use gloves to keep it off you fingers. The top coat won't stop it completely but it really slows it down.
Psychedelic!

Really is a nice surprise! You did it justice with your container, hopefully it'll settle down and still have some character to brag about!
How interesting the beauty that is within what others would have walked by.  Lovely!
I don't normally express appreciation for another guy's "junk" but Wow!   😉

If it is turning brown, mulberry would be a pretty good guess.  I've seen mulberry start as a bright yellow and become a chocolate brown through exposure to light.

Excellent work on an old piece of wood,   Wood is pretty outstanding also.   Beautiful.
