Made the templates out of 3/4" MDF, cut out on the scroll saw, sanded smooth on the inside track. The template was then fastened to the project board with a version of double sided tape. (Blue painters tape on both the project piece and template, CA Adhesive) Like the CA-Blue tape method as it leaves almost no gap between the pieces. The plunge router then cuts out the pattern, taking about 1/8" depth increase each pass. The final pass just about 1/32" in an attempt to get a clean finish. The depth of cut is about 5/8" on the 7/8" thick project piece. The template is removed, and the outside edge of the dog paw is band sawed to shape and then sanded. The most time consuming and difficult is sanding the bottom of each dog pad. Then 3 coats of poly, waxed and buffed. These are Mahogany and have done Cherry but both tend to burn easily with the router.
How'd you cut the outside form? B4 or afta the routing. If b4, a shame afta routing you routing it up... if afta, b4 routing, how'd you hold the piece down... I can just about picture a sale of air clamps.
If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

After routing the inside form, the template was removed from the paws board. Marked in pencil where I wanted the outside edge to be and cut it on the bandsaw. Then using a drum sander did the finish touches on the outside edge.. The top edges and bottom edges were rounded over with a 1/16" round over bit on the router table, then sanded.
