Hand Gun Cabinet

I made this for my brother to use as a locking cabinet for storing his handgun collection and various sundries.  It's made from Baltic Birch Plywood, Birch Hardwood and Walnut.  (Note: this cabinet was not designed to be a gun-safe in order to prevent theft.  It was made to provide a measure of safety (like a privacy lock) to avoid inadvertent access to the guns.) The cabinet case is made from plywood with Walnut edging.  The drawers are lap-jointed plywood with Walnut faces screwed on through the insides.  Heavy-duty soft-close metal drawer slides were used for providing a smooth and secure feel.  The drawer handles were handmade, carved from birch.  Since the unit was to sit inside a closet with louvered doors covering it, I put magnets on the cabinet doors and case to keep the unit closed when it wasn't locked.  Not shown are the styrofoam inserts (cut to fit the guns inside the drawers) which keep the guns in place when opening or closing the drawers.

Nicely done 👍🏼

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

It might not be a metal safe but I bet it would take quite a bit of effort to get in.

The maple panel is a nice accent to the walnut. Elegant way to safely store the hand guns.
well done alan he should love it. as for breaking in i think a thief would just take the whole cabinet and open later ?

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

Yes, a thief could certainly take the whole cabinet.   Again, that wasn't the intent here.  If it were me and I wanted to prevent that, I'd have bought a decent safe and anchored the thing in the basement into concrete.  This is intended for scenarios where someone - that likely you know (e.g., a child or grandchild) - comes upon this cabinet, finds it locked, and that indicates that they shouldn't go in.   This is similar (albeit more substantial) to a privacy lock on a bathroom.

Very nice work Alan! I like your handle design. I'm sure your brother will love it.
