Pine Cone In Epoxy Experiment

I saw a pine cone-in-epoxy project on You Tube and liked the results so I tried to duplicate it with this project. I used a round piece of mesquite  (1 1/4" x 10 1/2") and bored a recess 5/8" deep and painted the bottom white to lighten up the look of the finished epoxy. Then I cut the pine cones so the center was  approximately  even with the top of  the recess. I dipped the pine cones in clear epoxy to seal them to prevent air  bubbles with the blue pour . After they dried, I poured  epoxy with the blue pearl coloring up to the top of the recess. There were a few bubbles but not many..
Then I cut off the pine cones sticking out and turned the top flat and poured clear epoxy over the whole thing.

After the epoxy is completely dry, I will turn it in a big jam chuck to clean up the bottom and leave  a round portion to center a lazy Susan bearing to the bottom and turn it into another project when I get home.
This was my first time using that powdered pearl colorant for epoxy and I really like the results. I have plans for it on future projects.

Wow Jim, a hearty bowl of scorpion soup!

Looks very cool!
That’s an interesting one, Jim! Someone should snap that up once it’s a completed project.

May you have the day you deserve!

thats bad ass jim, love the results.

working with my hands is a joy,it gives me a sense of fulfillment, somthing so many seek and so few find.-SAM MALOOF.

I really like this, kind of looks like some weird sea creature with the blue background. Excellent job !
Different and interesting for sure.   Looks really good.

Looks great!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

A novel "turn" on the standard ho-hum bowls... you may guess that hollow bowls are not at the top of my list.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Mother Nature has some of the most interesting shapes, and figures going. Adding them to the "mix" is a surefire way to catch someone's eye. Interesting as it is beautiful Jim, nice job.
Jim

I am amazed at the different things you do.  I have some West system epoxy waiting for me to try something.

Thanks for posting

Petey

Really cool Jim.  I liked the "fossil" like pattern pine cones leave.
I like it a lot Jim!

Thank you all for the nice comments. I like the results except for that one bubble that I worked for  2 1/2 hours to pop with the torch...only to have it pop one more time when we left. I guess this means I need a pressure chamber!!

Hi Petey. How old is your West System ? I have some that is 30 years old and still works good, but the hardener turned red.
