Box of Rain

This box is a retirement gift for a coworker and is made from some mahogany scraps I glued up. The shape is pretty simple, rectangular with rounded ends and splayed slightly top to bottom. This gave me a good canvas to go circle carving, with only the ends being a bit of a challenge depth wise.
The carving is from Michael Cullen's inspiration of raindrops in a puddle... his creativity and carving skills are incredible.
I painted the box first using milk paint ( 3 coats) and then did my layout and carved through the paint. This was a suggestion that Brit (Andy) had made commenting on one of my prior projects. Adding depth through color this way worked really well and a technique I'll use again in the future.... thanks Andy!
I had left the top plain to offset the busyness of the carving...but it needed something so I went with a brown leather handle I found on Etsy.
Let me know what you all think!

Another great box Tom. I love your embellishments.

If your first cut is too short... Take the second cut from the longer end... LBD

Nice design and carving, Tom!

May you have the day you deserve!

Very creative, nicely done!

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

That is pretty cool and very unique. Nice gift!!

I like the paint and carve treatments you give your boxes, definitely add charm that usually no one ever tries 👍
Thanks everyone. This one came out much like the idea I had for it so I'm satisfied.
Now I'm keeping it company a few more weeks until I give it away.
Beautiful job, love the color and the carving.  Such a nice gift.

Turned out real nice Tom, good effect you get carving through the paint.
That looks great! The box looks so good that people will want to open it just to see what's inside.
Thanks guys... appreciate the comments
