Been a while since I posted a puzzle, however, new ones a re few and far between so here’s another migrated from LJ that was originally posted on Aug 22, 2021…
Looks like a lot of the pictures was lost in the upgrade debacle, so it’s fitting I re-publish it here with the missing warts... and blame Pottzy!
only to find the bloody thing didn't work… as would have been revealed by the SU model,
if I bothered to follow it through.
Dave mentioned that in his article, but why the hell should I have read that. After some innocent stalking, I tracked him down, contacted him and was informed of some modifications which I included as Version 2 in my design. I compensated by making the channels in two of the sides 1.5mm wider (increasing the overall length of those two sides by 3mm).
I have done the maths and it works… Sketchup confirmed it,
so don't bother grabbing for your calculator to verify my arithmetic and wasting your time and potentially confusing you even more.
Sticking to my MDF lamination technique, rather than using 4mm and 6mm dowels, I decided to cut my own out of 6mm sheet of MDF…
This worked out well as it presented an exact fit and I didn't have to trim the dowels to length,
Upkeeping with my ridiculous concept of an outside-in dice, I engraved the dice markings on the respective insides of the laminated sides. With the engravings on the insides, it dawned on me that the assembled box would look somewhat lame without identification markings on the outside, so the idea of animal engravings externally came into fruition,
All the engravings were made using a triple pass of the laser, creating a 1.5mm+ deep "trench"
which was ebony woodfiller filled,
sanded and tung oiled and hung out to dry.
Just a bit of trivia… did you know that the opposite sides of a dice add up to 7… if they don't, you have fake dice!
Assembled, but not yet buffed,
and yet to find a residential zoo.
For those like me that hate reading, the following videos may make reading the above unnecessary,

C'mon, fess up… how many of you went to check the sums on a Douse?
Keep safe, jocks... and your jocks, safe!

I can see you creating "sets" with theme critters. Could be Aussie "critters that kill on contact", "critters that cause a slow and painful death", "critters that leave no remains", and "critters that you can't see, but they can see you".
They are usually gift for kiddies, however Splinter, you've got me thinking for adults... maybe a funnel-web spider inside the box... it'll paralyse their hand making it easier to hold onto the sides while assembling.

"au contraire" JJ... If made out of solids, its 6 quadrilaterals with 2 dados in each... with your laser, any facing is open slather. Solids would not require lamination (and dowels). For me it's just easier to cut out of MDF, engrave and glue pieces together in the warmth of my office during winter. The sizes are proportional and can be to any chosen "unit"... all extra needed is the dados have to be a snidge wider than the thickness.
