From calamity to home remodel

When the upper kitchen cabinet relocated itself in late Jan. It set off a chain of events. Popcorn to smooth ceiling, new wall color, wainscoting, chair rail and baseboard, flooring and fixtures…new dishwasher and finally 5 months later I cleaned the shop in prep of doing something to take the place of the danged cabinet that set off this chain of events.

2 hours later, and 2,000 miles apart and we had the exact same thought after looking at all of those pics. LMAO

Looks better Dan, provided that rat is dead. I love me some chair rail, and you just don't see it that much anymore. But if it's a Rat raceway, it's gotta go. :-)

Dan you now we are just gnawing on yer leg...
Really impressive work.  Only five months?  My contractor took 11 months for a similar job, charged a king's ransom and didn't even leave a rat when finished.

Huh? Whadaya mean it ain't "measure once cut twice"?

Pottz, a real life example of scope creep. Still trying to figure a design for open shelving where the cabinet was. The rat is for the benefit of my grands who get a good laugh when their mom comes across the strategically placed rats when they visit.

Steve, it was a lot . Contracted the ceiling, everything else my wife and I did on weekends and some evenings after work. 65 this year and I can sure feel every up and down doing that flooring.

George, the chair rail was a thought as I saw how marked up the wall around the table was. Truth be known, a bit of nostalgia for me. I couldn’t even bring my self to use anything but “real” wood, which meant priming, sanding a painting. And for clarity…I appreciate the spewing of verbal vomit on this site.

Mike, if you didn’t get a rat you got ripped.

Appreciate the comments.

Any ideas for open shelving ?
Wow - that's an impressive project in that time frame, doing it all yourselves.
Funny how those small house projects get expensive real quick!

Looks like the dogs are wondering where their squeaky toy rat ran off to.

Great to have basically a new part of the house, hope I can do as good when I retire!
Dan,
Nother question. I'm penciled in to replace the laminate flooring in the kitchen/dining area, Is the stuff you used "luxury vinyl" or something else (I'm going to go waterproof)?
How thick is that stuff you used (just the planks)?
extensive work, the results are great, bet the dogs like it also.   well done

Ron

Splint, yes “luxury vinyl” planks. They are .195” thick and we used an underlayment called “QuietWalk Versa” . It feels padded and quiet when you walk across the floor.
In our basement we installed luxury vinyl plank over the concrete. For that we used a vapor barrier for obvious reasons.

The basement has a harder, feel and sound when walking across it. We installed it in 2017 and have had no issues.

We went waterproof upstairs as the poodle who has a beard drinks from the far side of his bowl and water would be everywhere. During the remodel I investigated that issue and we bought the Slopper stopper water bowl for him. It works great. No more wet floor or laps when he sets his head down.
Great info, thanks Dan!

Were those planks "snap lock"?

Small water spills and the wife's over-exuberant mopping led to the demise of the 20 year old composite flooring I installed.
5 mm will work well as the original is 7mm and the replacement needs to be able to go under some partitions that are set on top of the flooring.
Yes. A block and dead blow to seat each joint
i wish i would have used vinyl in the family room, although the bamboo has held up quite well with the beagle. as a matter of fact im installing the same bamboo in the living room in a couple days. orders from swmbo !

Thanks Ron. I think the dogs were just ready to have life back to normal. I think they are at least as set in their ways as I am.
Pottz, we had taken all the existing carpet out when we bought the house and replaced with oak hard wood flooring. The living/ dining had some thinner spaced oak which was about 3/16” below the new wood so going over that and
the existing in the kitchen brought everything to level without tearing out the existing. Thus the vinyl plank
hmmm. we have tile in the kitchen and the wife would love to remove it which i did once, and that was enough. but im thinking maybe i could lay the vinyl on top of the tile ? or maybe when im dead 🤣

That's a bunch of nice-looking work! I see the poodoos photobombing the pics, or are they additional inspectors? I'm glad that that rat is only a joke. We had some in our garage once when my kids were little. Not a comfortable situation.
