Shop Sign

This sign is a little surprise for a buddy of mine in Illinois. He has a shop called "A Call to Shoulders". It is downtown Aurora, Ill right on the Fox River. In his shop he has about 6-8 wood lathes and he teaches pen making and turning to veterans...many are disabled. The vets sell their pens and use the money to purchase a lathe for themselves at home to continue the pen making there. They really don't have to  do any sharpening because they are using all carbide tipped tools.  Arlin Eastman  from Lumberjocks was also teaching turning to vets in his shop in Iowa.

Greg gave me one of his wooden business cards with the logo burned in the front and all the other info written  in by hand on the back. So I thought I'd make him a sign with all the info for his desk or he can mount it on the door. I learned a little bit more on the laser by creating that half star up front of the logo using the vector modifying tool.

It is all 5/16" Baltic Birch plywood and finished with satin spray enamel. Lacquer is getting to be out of sight!!!
If you know Greg, don't tell him I did this!!
Cheers, Jim

That's really nice! What does the phrase mean? I sent Arlin bundles of wood pen blanks, drill bits and kits on several occasions. I thought he had his own gig. Doesn't matter to me, if this is where he volunteered.

Thanks Steve, Ron and Dark Lightning.

I am not sure of the meaning of a Call to Shoulders. When I talk to Greg in the future, I will ask and put it right here!!
Did Arlin come over to Craftisian? The last time I saw him I stopped at his house just after the tree fell on him. He was hurt worse than he got in the military!! Arlin has a whole separate shop  near Council Bluffs, Iowa. I brought him a bunch of Osage orange from my farmer friend Myron in Clarinda, Iowa.

I haven't conversed with him here, only on LJ and the pen turners forum. I sent the supplies to his place in Council Bluffs. I have a bunch of cutoffs. It may be time to send him another batch. I'll check that out. I'll cut them down into blanks, if I have enough to bother with.

Do  you know if Arlin signed up here??

Hi DarkLightning. Here is what AcalltoShoulders means:  It’s that veterans answered the call to arms and we civilians need to answer the call to shoulders. In that the shoulders are where you carry a heavy load, let someone rest their head when they need consoling and put someone when they can’t see. Also, if we civilians learned and built things while veterans were standing between us and danger, then we should be able to take some of the burden of starting a business off their shoulders and onto ours........................Cheers, Jim

Thanks for the explanation!
