Granddaughter's first Christmas gift

The box was created after I had finished the contents. The box construction is a pinned hinged with shaped sides/front/top. The box sides are maple and the lid is a piece of figured walnut.

Each rattle has a bird's eye maple center and various species for the caps.

The smallest has cherry caps, the middle one has Wenge caps with a veneer layer of mahogany and the largest has holly caps. Dry red beans are inside each rattle. They each have a unique sound. They all have a salad bowl finish on them.

I also posted a short blog with some construction details.

When I made this her family was living with us. A couple years later they moved into their own home. Sometime after that they discovered the smallest rattle was missing. For several years the box only held 2 rattles. Then last year we found the smallest rattle stuck inside another toy! The collection is once again complete.

Ryan/// ~sigh~ I blew up another bowl. Moke told me "I made the inside bigger than the outside".

Nicely done grandpa, isn't it fun to make things for grandchildren. They'll always have great memories from our craft made gifts. 👍
Thanks for the comments!
Oldtool - I've been making a Christmas and Birthday gift for each one. They are now 7 and 9.
I'm starting to run out of ideas 😀
And now I get to start over with a 3rd one this Christmas.
I've got about a third of them posted here so far.
Cool story Steve and great job on well thought out gift. I have never been able to get a constant reveal when I turn very thin laminations on the lathe. For some reason I always seem to see the difference in the thickness of each wood exposed. The symmetry especially of your middle rattle looks spot on perfect. I can tell some love went into these.
